So I did a clean flash of Lollipop last night, but the problem returned within minutes. I flashed KK early this morning and so far there is no sign of the problem. This confirms my suspicion that it is software / driver / kernel related and not the hardware.

I will continue using it for the rest of the day to monitor and then upgrade to Lollipop with the OTA, hopefully this solves it.

Did you upgrade to Lollipop with the OTA (sideloading the zip or via standard software upgrade)? Or did you flash the factory image?

I dont have sensor box but i can confirm the proximity sensor is working fine. Just tested by starting a call and moving my hand back and forth from the sensor.

Not sure how i can test the light sensor without that app you mention

I upgraded via the OTA

You can test the light sensor by enabling adaptive brightness and then moving into a darker or lighter area and see if the screen brightness adjusts automatically. Or you can change the brightness setting with Adaptive brightness switched on, because then the slider adjusts brightness relative to the "auto" setting. If it cannot detect any lux reading the brightness won't change when moving the slider while adaptive brightness is turned on.

I'm hoping that upgrading via the OTA is the solution for me.

It seems that you obviously fried the sensor circuitry. But at least you still have the slider. You do don't you?

EDIT: Just kidding... It should not matter which method you use to update. In order to update OTA, you will have to roll back the firmware and wait. I doubt this will help you. Check the MD5 numbers of the file you downloaded and re-flash. If the numbers are wrong, you should not have been able to flash the image in any case or your phone might have bricked, so I think your image is fine. Just reflash.

Yep, must be. I fry it every few minutes on Lollipop but never on KK :p

To be honest the adapt brightness is the least of my concerns if I had to do it manually it would be fine... annoying, but fine. It's the proximity sensor that bugs me. Having to press the power button to switch on the screen before I can disconnect a call.

Fortunately I would not have to wait long... The 5.0 upgrade was available for me from the moment I got in but I wanted to confirm that the problem was gone before I do the upgrade.

I know it should not make a difference how I upgrade, but I find it strange that this only affects me. I was sorta hoping you would say you did the OTA, then I could blame the factory image.

I downloaded the images directly from Google's factory image page shortly after they were made available. For interest sake, how do I check the MD5 number of the image I downloaded so I can compare it against the one currently available on their site.

EDIT: Nevermind, found a utility to check and it matches the one on their site.

Do you mean the icons that were on the top left of the notification bar? If so, yes they have gone now.
I now have to swipe down (from the clock area) on the lock screen to see all the notifications -when they are many.

Correct. The icons on the top left of the notification bar which was still visible from the lock screen. I have my phone in a pouch, so its usefull to just look at the top to see if there are any notifications.

After upgrading to 5.0 via OTA the problem is back again, so it's definitely something with Lollipop. I found a thread on XDA and the Nexus support forums of other people with the same issue, there is no solution to the problem yet but at least now I know that I am not alone. Annoying and somewhat comforting at the same time.

I've seen a lot of people buying their N5's from Orange. Are they reputable? Their prices are very good, compared to cash phones for Vodacom. I assume they import. But the prices on there, that's what you pay?

I bought mine through Orange. The price they show there is what you pay and the prices displayed includes VAT. Phone took just over a week to get to SA.

Sweet thanks man. I assume they use a courier for shipping?
