Google Nexus 5

I'm getting good standby time and better voice quality after forcing my N5 to only use WCDMA on CellC. No 2G<-->3G band hopping and no LTE searching. Was easy enough to do via the hidden testing menu accessible via *#*#4636#*#*.

Go to Phone Information and select WCDMA from the "preferred network type" options.

I would expect it to return to the default value after a power cycle. If I ever turn the phone off I will know for sure.

You can also install this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cellmapper.nexus5fieldtestmode

Gives you easier access to the menu. I also find that switching to one mode is more reliable (and on Vodacom EDGE is useless in any case).

No. I haven't tried plugging it into a PC yet. But, as I understand it, the N5 cannot be used as a normal mass storage device. Plugging it into a PC connects it as an MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) device. To make this work an MTP driver must be installed.

To get the driver you will likely have to download the latest Android SDK.

What can't you access when in MTP mode? Mine can access all the user files - not just limited to "media" (i.e. pics and music and videos). I've used it to side load APKs...

The Android system files are not shown, though.

EDIT: Running Windows 8.1

Finally got my Spigen Slim Armor case and screen protector this week. This is a very beautiful, high quality case which is highly underrated. The combination of a soft TPU inner case with a harder polycarbonate outer shell gives the case much rigidity and offers very good protection. The various port cut-outs are the right size at the right places and the case edges offers good ground clearance for the screen and camera lens. The case is applied and removed fairly easily and snugs the phone tight without running the risk of interfering with a screen protector. It does add some bulk of about 1mm - 1.5mm to the phone and the power and volume buttons are slightly harder to press. The case offers good grip but are prone to smudges which can be easily cleaned with a soft cloth. Overall it really leaves your phone looking great and feeling protected.

I'm also a bit annoyed with the post office, they take over the delivery from USPS once it arrives in SA. They never informed me of my local tracking number and I was beginning to think the parcel may have been lost after a few days of inactivity on USPS tracking information after it cleared SA customs. I was emailing Amazon and Spigen for a couple of days trying out find where it was only to receive a delivery notice to collect at the post office this week. They also charged me R102 extra shipping and handling fees, even after I paid shipping on the original order

I so want to install that N5 Field Test Mode app but, the app's description says model D820 only. I've got the D821.

And a side note: how hard is it to read the model number off the back plate of the N5?!

Guh. Sorry - didn't realize it was only for the American model! Sorry!

Been there, done that, ruined a perfectly good SIM....

I have done it a couple of times successfully before. The trick is to have a proper sharp knife. But I don't need it right now, so I will get a sim tomorrow.

Actually cut a couple with scissors with good success. Was only the first one that got messed up. Had to go to a Vodashop to do a sim - swop and explain to them (long before it became well known that you could cut them) that I cut up my sim with scissor and that I'd like a new one. :)

Been there, done that, ruined a perfectly good SIM....

I tried it once with a sim for my mothers iPad a few years ago. Then the sim got stuck.

I ruined both the sim and the iPad's sim tray, not to mention major cosmetic damage to the iPad itself. Never again.

TB FTW! I restored all my app data without a glitch as well as wifi settings, sms/mms and call logs
