Google Nexus 5

:D
All I did was install Greenify and Franco kernel. No UV or UC apart from the stock settings produced by the kernel developer. Admittedly no calls today which will make a difference, but even with calls this setup will produce the same or better stats than my S2. So to all of those worried about battery life, there is hope and plenty of it. If I could run this on ART instead of Dalvik, it could be a bit better. But, running the Xposed framework prevents the phone from running ART.

I definitely want Greenify (if only to stop Google+ sucking the life out of everything) but not so sure what to do about root just now. I used to just use the simple Chainfire root rather than replace the kernel, but I'm still easy just now. Lots of reading to do I think :)

First time I am using Greenify - seems to do the job. I froze Google+ - Facebook is enough for me and I don't even use it. Someone needs to give me a proper reason to use G+. I did the simple Chainfire rooting but then my flash addiction got the better of me and after reading a bit decided on Franco kernel because of it's volume gain capabilities and it would seem to be the best one out there.

My phone is at Heathrow and heading towards my sweaty hands tomorrow :) :) :)

My mate never managed to get a case though, so without searching back through the thread, any recommendations for a decent one? I like the type that fold over like a book cover but without replacing the back cover a la Galaxy style, I think it might be a bit bulky. Any decent ones about?

I have a Spigen Ultra Hybrid with the clear back case and air cushions. While the protection is good it does take away from the slim feeling of the phone.

Been thinking of getting one of these http://za.mobilefun.com/41767-spigen-sgp-neo-hybrid-for-google-nexus-5---metal-slate.htm

Been using the Franco kernel for a while, have found it to be on par with the Siyah kernel for the S2. So it was a no brainer for me :D

Was a bit of a miser yesterday, but I am impressed by the improved standby time (Franco kernel, -25mV undervolt, Greenify):

Received and set up yesterday. Installed 4.4.2 OTA and rooted using CF auto root and all good to go.

So I started loading my favourite apps and the initial impression is very positive so far. Words with friends is incredibly laggy and jagged though so I'm assuming this is the apps fault, does anyone else have this loaded and can comment?

It really has a lovely screen and also feels great in hand so I'm very happy so far.

Now for a case, going to check out the recommendations and order something today :)

Not really related to Word with Friends, but the Minion Rush game lags rather often on both my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, both of which are on 4.4.2. This would be more to do with the application not being optimised for 4.4.2 I believe, as other apps that I use simply fly.

Yep, s'pose so. WWF ran nice and smooth on my S4 so I guess we're just ahead of the times :)

I ordered a dock for my S4 a while ago. Delivery was fine. The product, however, was a cheap chinese POS that didn't work. It was a R400 mistake.

I guess you'll be fine with an official product like the one linked.

Thanks. I just took the plunge and ordered the official flip one even though it's not in stock. I'm due back home mid Jan so hopefully it'll be there by the time I get back. Kid gloves until then :)

Anyone having any LCD Backlight bleed? I seem to have a little bit.

I'm thinking about installing Franco kernel but am just wondering about what the procedure is returning to stock when there is an OTA update?

OK, so I installed Franco Kernel last night and now out of the blue Google+ kept my phone awake half the night. I haven't even opened Google+ since I got the phone so goodness knows how that appeared.

Problem is it doesn't show up in my Greenify so I I can't manage it? Anyone had this and how can I I deal with it?

You will need the donate version of Greenify in order to freeze system apps...

Reboot your device. It should stop the Google+ nonsense. Had a similar issue with Google Now.

Oh thanks, I rebooted and it seems to have done the trick. I'll buy Greenify then because this seems like a must have app so far.

I also bought the full FKU last night so I've got a lot of reading to do to catch up.

With regards to the OTA updates, from what I've read so far, I'm assuming that there will be a stock kernel available for download somewhere so just fastboot and install that and we're ok for OTA? Then a quick root with CF-auto root, back onto FKU for the latest kernel and we're good to go?

Man, I never bothered rooting my S4 and now I'm back to being a n00b :D

Both of those are must have apps, IMO. FKU more Nexus-specific, though, but very much worth it.

Yes and no.

You would need to flash a stock kernel, but leave the bootloader unlocked. You can then apply the OTA update, and just flash the SuperSU.zip file before flashing your custom kernel of choice. So basically, a few adb commands and it should be done. I would take a backup, anyway. Oh, and if you have the paid version of SuperSU, you can enable "OTA Survival" which keeps root even after flashing an OTA update.

CF Auto-Root will wipe your device when flashing, it seems that only the S4 is immune to being wiped (from what I have seen).

Cool. So I'll buy the SuperSU as well, that should keep things fairly simple. I'll happily buy Chainfire's stuff anyway (I actually bought Mobile Odin Pro just as a way of donating and have never used it :) )

Okay, so I've got a few questions around the stock kernel and keeping root, but I'll keep reading and figure it out as I go along. Apart from anything else I'm still working 12 hour shifts every day and have been all the way through Crimbo and NY :wtf:
