Yes and no.

You would need to flash a stock kernel, but leave the bootloader unlocked. You can then apply the OTA update, and just flash the SuperSU.zip file before flashing your custom kernel of choice. So basically, a few adb commands and it should be done. I would take a backup, anyway. Oh, and if you have the paid version of SuperSU, you can enable "OTA Survival" which keeps root even after flashing an OTA update.

CF Auto-Root will wipe your device when flashing, it seems that only the S4 is immune to being wiped (from what I have seen).

Cool. So I'll buy the SuperSU as well, that should keep things fairly simple. I'll happily buy Chainfire's stuff anyway (I actually bought Mobile Odin Pro just as a way of donating and have never used it :) )

Okay, so I've got a few questions around the stock kernel and keeping root, but I'll keep reading and figure it out as I go along. Apart from anything else I'm still working 12 hour shifts every day and have been all the way through Crimbo and NY :wtf:

Hectic. But FWIW- the stock kernel is not bad at all. Actually ran with it for a few days, and Google have done well with the performance to battery life ratio. But, I've been using Franco's kernels for a while now, and having the plethora of options available via the FKU will always see me revert to them.

I've frozen it in TB previously but I use it now and again so don't want to uninstall it completely, hibernation is first choice, TB second and uninstall a last option.

It's actually amazing how Google spend so much time and energy making this thing a battery draining pain in the arse.

I was pleasantly surprised with the battery life on stock with just the CF auto root applied. Now on Franco I've had a bad start and battery is draining like schit just now because I can't get some time to set up and bandwidth here in the middle of nowhere to download the xposed framework.

I'll plug away and get it right eventually though.

Reports show that Franco r29 has reboot issues. I am on r28 no problems there.

Xposed won't necessarily solve battery drain. It is merely a vehicle with which you download modules like Gravity Box to customise your phone.

I wanted it to enable the ability to hibernate the system apps. I managed to sideload it earlier and I've set it up quickly to hibernate G+ and the Play store.

Now I need to try and figure out what's going on with BBS because I can't get that to load. And I've got a meeting in 35 minutes :D

Okay. I use TB for freezing and backups. Always have, always will :cool:

I can confirm this to be true. It seems to be draining my battery as well. Might be going back to stock.

You don't need the Xposed framework to run Greenify, it can run as a standalone app.

Now I need to try and figure out what's going on with BBS because I can't get that to load. And I've got a meeting in 35 minutes :D

Seems that the app is still having issues in KitKat. Could be related.

I'm not sure if it would, in the case of smartphones. Where did you buy yours from? Maybe you can perform an RMA?

I couldn't enable the experimental features of which the system apps were part of, unless I went through the process of installing Xposed. Maybe I misunderstood but it seemed like that was the only way to get to the system apps was by checking a box after a 3 step installation process.

Interesting that it seems to do this. Can't really verify if this is indeed the only way to get it working, because I am also using this with the Xposed framework.


I'll do the reading later and see what's happening, but r30 is performing so well this morning I'm pretty sure I've got all potential rogues nailed already. Early days but wow, very noticeable increase in screen on time versus battery drain. I'm sold already.
