Google Nexus 5

Weird. Maybe it just took really long for the network to pick the device up and send the APN settings. But some people have mentioned that they had issues on Vodacom with their N5's.

Yeah, it was odd. I had read about it on another thread but that seemed to be a data only problem. This was no cell or data.

I tried first at OR Tambo last night, then again in CPT, then again in Hermanus all with no joy. Popped it into the iPhone and no problems anywhere. Then this morning I thought I'll try and troubleshoot, but voila. All working nicely with no sign of any reason why it wouldn't :)

Glad to hear. Would have been extremely disappointed if it was my phone.

Luckily my American N5 played along nicely with both VC and CellC...

Thought it appropriate to update the thread...I am now the proud owner of a N5. Woohoo. This is awesome little device.
Thanks for all the advice. Appreciate it.

Have had mine for about 2 months and I am still loving it

Yeah; I'm really really loving it!

Got 18 hrs out it yesterday and still had 5 % battery, with 4hrs of screen-on time.
IMHO, that's adequate, considering I have two pages of widgets running.

These are my screens. Neat, minimalistic and functional.

Also recently got a nexus 5. Upgraded from the 4 and love how smooth everything feels. I'm a pretty standard user and not one to modify much. Any reasons to justify messing around a bit? Also anyone know where I can get a screen protector? :-)

Messing around for the following reasons:
1. Battery life
2. Screen adjustments (if you want to get into the nitty gritty)
3. because it is moerse fun

You will have to import a screen protector. In theory, there should be no supplier in SA. Look for one of my earlier posts - The screenprotectors I imported with my phone are brilliant! And it has a lifetime guarantee (for what it is worth)

Awesome thanks. How's your battery life? I'm a pretty heavy user and to get close to 5 hours screen time makes me happy enough! I'm also an idiot lol. I'm importing a crystal view ringke fusion and paid for tracked shipping and could have got 3 screen protectors for another 80 Rand with lifetime warranty as well! Only realised after I purchased the item from eBay. Guy on a forum is also selling a Neo Hybrid case with screen protector. What's your thoughts on that? I currently have a spigen ultra slim but it scratches the phone on removal sadly :-(

Battery life has a couple of items linked to it. In my view you can't isolate hours screen on time from phone calls, total time on, etc etc.
E.g. I can easily manage 6hrs screen on time over 6hrs,but doing that over 24hrs won't happen as a result of background processes that is being kept alive during the 24hrs. The last check I did was 34hrs with 4.5hrs screen on and about 45mins calls. that paints a slightly better picture.

Mind is modified for the fun of it but not as a necessity. With my previous Samsung I had to root and instill custom ROM to make the phone likable. But with my N5 I just rooted, installed GravityBox and Franco's kernel.

I have the Spigen Ultra Slim case on mine, have not found it to scratch the phone... How often are you removing the cover, in any event?

Ultra fit I mean. It doesn't cover the bottom completely right? Maybe it's just me but read a few complaints on net. They aren't major marks, not even visible unless under light. Well only a few times to show off the back but not anymore now till get a different case. Anyway. Thinking bout just staying stock and rooting to change to franco kernel to tweak a few things. Should be fine right?

If you are referring to this one (the one that I own), then yes, it doesn't cover the bottom completely. Just has a lip. I chose this over the Neo Hybrid as the headset jack was too small on the Neo Hybrid for my headphones.

You won't go wrong using Franco kernel. A very good developer, have had no major issues with any of his kernels.

Awesome stuff. That's the one. It's very hard to remove as well, maybe could just be me doing the damage a bit. which colour you have?

I have an Spigen Ultra Hybrid and don't like it very much. It's thick and not the same shape as the Nexus 5.

The consequence of this is that it leaves a gap between the phone and the case at the bottom where the port is. All manner of stuff enters here and since the back is clear it is quite visible.

What bothers me more is that the plastic of the case on the inside has been scratched. I can't see anything on the phone but it must be there.

So no - stay away from this one!

Same as in the link- the champagne gold colour. Felt that it would go better with my white N5 than the black case would...

Thanks for the feedback... it does look big, which is the same problem I had on my N4 with the official bumper. It may not look it in the pics, but it adds quite a bit to the size of the device.

I see that the Ultra Hybrid comes with graphics. Perhaps that will alleviate your problem?

Yeah it will. Just haven't gotten around to making some. And call me vain but I do like seeing "Nexus" on the back. :)
