Google Reader Meets Its Inevitable End

Busy looking at Feedly now - its just not the same. The one thing I like about Reader is that when you scroll over things it marks them as read. All the other RSS readers you have to click some or other button to mark it as read :(

It seems slow as well. Might just be because of the sudden uptake of users.

Update: Its looking better:

Auto-Select On Scroll
Should feedly automatically select and mark-as-read entries as you scroll the latest page or other views organized by time? yes, no or inlined-only. Use inlined-only if you want this behavior only on 'entire content inlined' views. The default setting is inlined-only.

The thing that really sucks about this is there were a number of good RSS players before Google Reader stepped in. Then they did what Google always does, and sucked the life out of the market by releasing a free version with Google's search engine at the backend and wiped out all comers. Now they're stepping out because there's no money in it, and all the other guys left long ago so there's literally nobody in the game.

It's going to be hard to fill the vacuum. I'm quite miffed about this.

I'm pretty bummed! Use Google Reader every day. Guess it's time to start trialing alternatives.

I'm with undesign here... Love Reeder but all my feeds are via Google! Damn! Double Damn!

Crap! My favourite app of Google is going to die. I wonder what % of G+ is generated via it tho. Oh wells.. starts the process of looking for a new home

This really irritated me this morning, but I've followed the best alternative Feedly (which currently syncs with Google, but has built it's own back-end so when Google Reader ends they can switch over) - I have tried it before and dismissed it, but it has definitely matured now. The Android app is also amazing. Now I don't know why I wasn't always using this service: http://www.feedly.com. So in a way, thanks Google (though I'm still irritated with them).

Oh no. I use Reader the entire day on my PC, Android phone and Android tablet. Its the best and most efficient.

Please don't shut it down STUPIDS

I'm in trouble when they shut reader down, our work firewall is stupidly paranoid and works on a whitelist (luckily Google.com is allowed) where I can't access 99% of the internet. Funny enough MyBB is one of the few sites we can access but I was using reader for all my news and other interest updates between breaks and as a sort of morning paper.

Edit:
From the trends page:
From your 168 subscriptions, over the last 30 days you read 10,453 items, clicked 3 items (this is wrong, assuming it doesn't register if I right click and open in new tab), starred 284 items, and emailed 3 items.
Since March 1, 2011 you have read a total of 300,000+ items

I don't use the Google Reader app. I use the Reader webpage in Opera Mobile. This is the quickest way to browse headlines and read articles since an external browser doesn't have to be opened (or you you have to use the crap built in browsers in Feedly, Pulse, etc). Apps like Flipboard, Feedly, Pulse, etc look much better but I love the speed and efficiency of using Reader.

I've also moved to Chrome from Firefox a few weeks back. The reason for not moving sooner was the RSS feeds in the Bookmarks toolbar (in Firefox) which I loved. I finally moved to Chrome and starting using Reader full time on PC too. Now this  Chrome is more resource heavy than Firefox, so I'm probably going to switch back.
