Mortal Kombat (reboot) 2021

Just finished it.

Way better than expected. Well balanced ito fan service. R-rating was well utilized, CGI is on point. Combat scenes are engaging. High level of nostalgia. All in all a pretty surprising & a well implemented effort.

PS: Bonus marks to Kano's character. He was a ball of fun.
You mean PG13 fights with R-rated finishers.

Also watched it tonight. Really cool. Especially when you start noticing the game dialogue.

A pretty good movie. I'm glad Hollywood is catching up after the major worldwide lockdown. I still have scars from the b-grade kak in 2020.

Downloaded it to watch.

Not worth the disk space. Appallingly bad script / plot, equally bad acting, direction was rote.
CGI effects were pretty crap too.

All in all, barely watchable. 4/10.

I give it 4, as Captain Boomerang from Suicide Squad, uh, sorry, Kano was fun.

Whats with Raiden having an Austrian Schwarzenegger accent?

Wow, to the people that didn’t think this was a great movie, are you nuts? Sure there was no tournament so you could maybe say that this could be a prequel.

I didn’t watch the movie for the plot (couldn’t actually give hoot about the plot). I watched the movie for the fight scenes and fatalities and they did not disappoint.

To me, this is a 10/10 for a reboot. Better than the original in my opinion.

Now I’m going to watch it again.

MK is steeped in lore so the plot is certainly important.

The fight scenes were great but the plot wasn't. The bad guys were just there for the sake of being bad guys. Little to no history as to why they're doing what they're doing, or even why they're aligned to Outworld.

I don't mind that there was no tournament and that it's a prequel. But I did expect a lot more back story and character development...

You can’t always have it both ways. If you want a better plot and more back story to the characters then that doesn’t leave much room for all the fight scenes. Unless they make it a 4 hour movie like Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Also, we have Scorpion and Sub Zero’s back story right at the beginning.

To me, MK is about the fight scenes and the fatalities and they were just awesome.

Hence my earlier comment. There were too many fight scenes. Every tiny encounter or disagreement turned into a fight. And the story suffered as a result.

For me it's about a balance between the two, as the games have always been. If it's just about fights and fatalities, then making a movie is pointless. Could just play the game and skip the story. Movies are about stories, always have been. There's a reason why pornos never rate highly

There's more than enough good flicks with good fights and good story; but the feels of today.

"You can’t always have it both ways."

Is just a load of kak and the way of the apologist.

I just rewatched the 1995 movie. It still holds up fairly well, although it does have tones of survivor - who will be voted off the island next.

Sorry, Goro, you need to bring me your torch, the tribe has spoken, and your time is done.

I still hold that the 2021 revision is a heap of steaming poop in comparison (with the exception of Kano, and some of the fatalities)

I thought this was a brilliant Mortal Kombat movie.

As a classic MK fan, I got to plug my own backstory, using MK1, MK2, MK3 & Trilogy as reference.
I thought the seeing “characters for the sake of it” thing was sweet. I enjoyed seeing their interpretation of my namesake :giggle:
Characters die, move up the tower, beat the main guy and come back for the next game/tournament.

I don’t need an MK movie to be a deep story.
I just want it to remind me of the uncountable hours spent learning moves and fatalities ( and babalities, friendships) and having fun in my youth.
It did that for me  that “kano wins” scene was perfect

could have done without the guy with the hammer though, no idea who he is.

You’ve pretty much summed it up for me too. Great enjoyable movie.

It’s like people take movies waaaay too seriously. They can’t enjoy it for being a martial arts movie. There has to be an entire story blah blah. Boring. Give me action, give me great fight scenes, give me gore. That’s what MK is about. That’s what this movie did for me. Brought back all those childhood memories.

Something satisfying seeing Jax smash a head like it was tomato.

Watched it on saturday. Was really impressed.
Love how they used the characters game moves in the movie, really cool

Story wasnt too bad. I dont need a really deep drama in the background. I came for fighting, and i got fighting.

I think most of the 'deep story' could be improved by more story and fledging out a few things instead of focusing too much on the opening 8 minutes and letting the rest suffer. As I've said in my original commentary, it utterly fails as a movie but is good enough for a brawler and a starting point for mortal kombat. For their next title they might want to work on making a fight actually feels like a fight, if you've ever been in one you would know that getting hit that hard isn't something you just dust of, especially if you are thrown into a wall or hit a huge ****ing hammer. haha. What do you think?

This is why I thought that Cole should have started out as a kid playing mortal kombat 1 in the arcade which then inspired him like a lot of us to try out martial arts ending up as a cage fighter.
