Google+ takes aim at Facebook

Just taken the demo and it looks pretty sweet! Not sure how many friends will move from fb though..

rpm please can you put links to products/services mentioned in the article in the actual article? Would be nice.
 
I will give it a try once it goes public, but I'm pretty sure I won't give up facebook for it because it won't be easy getting people to switch over...
 
What happened to Google Wave? Looks like they are doing the same thing here, but in a more familiar (read: facebook) way. But, I like it nevertheless.
 
Mxit no1 in south africa and i dont think it will change. Teens are much more into mxit because it easy and cheap to use. Not many people has real internet on there pc its to expansive. Mxit only take a few cents a day while facebook on your phone will take a few rand for just a status update. R2/mb

Well the value in facebook is not the technology, but rather the sheer mass of connections build up. I am not sure whether I will bother rebuilding those collections on Google Plus. There is no reason to switch from one closed system to another - so until there is an open decentralized distributed social networking system I will stay with facebook. The argument that one corporate is more or less evil than another for me is not something that will be sorted out soon, so moving from one to the other is pretty pointless IMHO.

The only thing facebook really needs that GooglePlus has is these "circles" concept. The option to present different "faces" to different connections will mean that I can dump LinkedIn as well and have the benefit of overlapping social/business networks will work better than the current LinkedIn/Facebook mess.

I don't want instant search.
I don't want predictive text.
I don't want previews.
I don't want "Fade effects".
I don't want "everything" toolbars.

I don't want personalized results.
I don't want geographically relevant results.
I don't want cookies that never expire
I don't want to have to disable Java whenever I visit google
I don't want social media telling me who "might" be a friend based on snooping my email.
I don't want people tagging me or my children in photos.


I want search.
I want a simple box to enter my search terms and a big button labeled "Search"

I want it to return a list (preferably 50) results that I could further filter by the simple expediance of adding or subtracting terms from my search query.

Google was able to do this 10 years ago, why can't they bloody well do it today.

Hmmm, I think Google have the right idea on a social network that allows you to profile different kind of friends- FB is utterly retarded in that regard although they have tried to improve it. You need to be able to have seperate relationship types and allow a single person to have MULTIPLE labels- i.e. friend and work colleague. The trick is to automatically profile content such as photos correctly so your work and social friends don't see the same tagged photos/wall posts and so forth. If they can get that right it will be awesome.

On the other hand I hope it DOESN'T take off as I am already too dependant on Google for many things and I don't like one company getting to be too dominant. At some point it could go bad, its really tough for such a large corporation not to. It most likely will not be intentional, but the combination of all your search, communications, social interactions, geographic locations and so forth all through one company is not ideal. Add operating system and applications (browser) and it starts getting a little worrying.

So I guess you drive around with a car from like the 1920's? Cause I mean, it gets you from A to B right? Screw all the features that make life easier....
