Gordon's Bay ADSL problems

How is ADSL these days in Gordon's Bay?
I'm might be renting there in the next month or two, and ADSL would be a nice to have.

Been a baaaad week or two. Latency slowly climbing again. ISP independent.

I am in Somerset West, also crap. Reply timeouts, Telkom keeps on doing a port reset when I tell them what the problem is and that the port was already reset. :/

Yea :(
Then late in the night the usage die down and things return to normal:

I've been having incredibly bad latency over the last 2 months, with an average ping of 1500ms on the 2nd hop (exchange) from about 19:00 to 24:00. So far after myself and a friend have continually complained to Telkom and Afrihost, nothing has happened. I've now taken to graphing the poor latency in hopes they they can then actually SEE there is a problem, and not just ignore it.

Here is a rather cramped graph of latency on the 2nd hop taken over a month. You can check the original data and scripts I used to get this data from https://github.com/SilverCode/ExchangeCongestion

Anyone else experiencing sluggish/slow connections in and around Gordons Bay?

Latency seems fine most of the time. Browsing is sluggish, speed tests slow.
I have tried multiple ISP's and get the same results.

I did have sluggish browsing (sluggish might be an understatement), but it was latency related. Doing a standard once off traceroute would often show a lowish ping, but if you did mulitple consecutive traceroutes and take the high/low/average, it was a different story.

Telkom did discove and fix a routing issue though that was causing the problem and resolved it on Monday. Since then my speeds have been back to normal.

Gordon's Bay ADSL problems

Been experiencing extreme latency, especially in the evenings.
Morning line good, 10ms latency / download 3.6 Mbps
From 6pm steadily degrading. Latency 300ms+ and download max .5 Mbps

Phone number area (021 856)
ADSL line speed 4Mbps
ISP's capped Telkom + Afrihost + WebAfrica (all ISP accounts give similar problems, also tried Telkom guest account)
Line starts seriously degrading from 4pm. 8pm almost unusable until midnight when latency starts to improve again.

Where in GB are you? If close enough, log a fault, get a techie out and ask them to move your port to the IMAX dslam.

Thanks! I'm in Mountainside. I will do just that. I think the attenuation is good.
Interestingly yesterday after one person raised the same experience on the Gordon's Bay FB page there was literally an avalanche of responses from people experiencing the exact same issues. The GBay exchange obviously in need of a major upgrade!

My guess is that you're on a congested dslam. The exchange is fine as I am not experiencing these issues. I know there are 2 bigger dslams, one of them being the IMAX dslam. The other ones is heavily congested.

Ive dropped you a private message.

GBay ADSL problem has now been resolved. There was a problem at the exchange but don't know the exact cause. Maybe they changed a vacuum tube, or perhaps the tannie at the switchboard came back from leave :D
Tested my line last night and latency stable and sub 10ms :)

So I would hazard a guess DSL congestion is still rife in Gordons bay?
I'm trying to help my dear mother in Gordons Bay so had her upgraded to a 4 bps uncapped deal at telkom (after which we've taken 2 months and MULTIPLE telkom tickets to get the line stable again (i.e. not losinng sync every 10 minutes).

However now with a perfect 4 Mbps sync and amazing line attenuation, she is struggling to get more than 500kbps out of the line (with the same crazy latency mentioned earlier in this post), especially in the afternoon/evenings.

Can't believe this has been an issue in the area since 2014? Anything to be done?

I live on Old Sir Lowerys Road. Our ADSL issues also started in 2014. Latency never under 1000ms, weeks of downtime affecting the whole area etc. Telkom tech told me they weren't investing any more money on copper in this area. Now the area is covered by Openserve and Vodacom fibre. Hooray.

Thanks yeah, that was posted in 2013, hence asking if this is still an issue? Is SuperCharl even around to take a look?

SuperCharl might have been gone for a while, but he commented not too long ago. He's around. And making a difference.
