It's R1050 from take2 usa now... I can get them at a local shop for R1400, but I know their cost is R1000, so I'll strong arm them to R1300, then I have a warranty and I don't have to wait for a boat...
Yes, but then I have to pay for couriers to Sennheiser and back. I like having an agent when I buy something I think I might need a warranty for, I don't like doing the grunt work myself... I like waiting even less, so if I can get them off the shelf I win.
It's like comparing a souped up Audi A4 vs an Audi RS4 Avant (the one modded by Porsche a while back?). The A4 runs off normal fuel, but the Avant is designed to run off high octane fuel. Because the Avant is being run off normal fuel in the test/"review", it performs similarly, and so is graded (pun) similarly. I'm sure you understand the analogy...
Running something designed to be optimal without being amped, and testing it against something that is designed to be amped to operate optimally without amping it, is complete bs and unfair.
Your analogy is just plain wrong and you're missing my point completely. Both sets have similar prices and at those prices, the sr80's outperform the 555s. Amplification will set you back another $300 for a decent unit, which multiplies the price. Sure, the HD555s may be better THEN, but then there are other options available for $400+ that would kick the 555s' ass even without amplification.
As for testing in optimal situations: how is that fair? It has to be realistic, not optimal. Optimal would skew the data, as that would involve $30k+ worth of supporting gear, which nobody at the bottom end of the market will pay for.
Oh I understand your point, you just cannot compare things on price only when one requires amplification and one doesn't. Simple. Unfair comparison from the start, rather compare phones that don't need amplification.
The HD555s don't require amplification... They just benefit from it, like most headphones would. They have a low impedance at 50ohms.
The SR-60 is quite low...
