Grado Headphones

I don't believe you'll hear any difference with amplification (unless an amp is broken). HeadFi snobs even insist you need amplification for IEMs! The tiny amps required for driving headphones (even high impedance models) to unsafe levels are ridiculously easy to produce.

I don't buy it.
 
They sound great even without amplification, and I am used to audiophile sound, my stereo system is worth well over R100k. That said, I have not tried the 555's with an amp yet, I have one lying around, maybe I should fire it up again. (I have also not tried the grados, but I'm not interested in headphones that are not circumaural)
 
Just ordered another set of the HD555's from take2 for R991!

Hey PP, have your Sennies arrived yet? Looking for some feedback.

The stuff I ordered from amazon.com on the 2nd has shipped from Take2, so I should receive it tomorrow.

Eish, going to be up all night listening to these things.

Don't really know what to say? Other than they are perfect. They are incredibly comfortable, can barely feel them on my head and my glasses are sitting perfectly. The sound stage is unbelievable, feels like I'm in a big room listening to big speakers. Sounds are well spread out. Of course, also hearing lots of things I couldn't on my Z-2300.

Hi PP

What sort of sound "bleeding" are you getting with the 595s. I am keen on getting a pair but I can't have them sounding like speakers on my head. How far away can you hear music when on a decent volume level?

Hi. At a fairly high volume I can hear them from at least 5m away. So not sure if they'll suit you. Pity because decent closed Sennies are pricey/production spec.

I am going to see if I can get my sister to bring me a pair of HD438s when she comes to visit from the US next month. If I get them, then I'll let you guys know what the closed ones at a similar price are like.

Reaper84, another option would be to go for the PC300/PC350 headset. They're closed and apparently use HD555/595 drivers? Not sure. Their impedance is higher, you will definitely need an amp/lified sound card.

I am looking at getting the HD448's. I have seen some good reviews and I can get them locally for R950.

Will give the PC300/350's a look.
 
I would find it hard paying R950, when the superior HD555 are around that price too (from Take2/Amazon USA)... But if you need sealed, you need sealed. Perhaps Take2 bring the HD448's in cheap, too? Unless you go with your sister bringing them in. Also IIRC the PC350's aren't too much more than R1,000 either from Take2. I'd imagine they'd be quite a bit better than the HD448 (although the PC350's mic isn't detachable :p).

Another option would be HD215's, also less than R1,000 and sealed and very popular.

Loving how gentle the HD595's highs are on the ears. Highs are very piercing on my THX Logitech Z-2300. The satellites aren't all that good according to audiophiles.
 
The 448s are R1400 at take2 and the pc350s are R2300. I'll shop around and see what's available.
