Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA4), a violent videogame from developer Rockstar Games, has smashed all entertainment records in its first week on sale, raking in more than US500m.
The eagerly awaited but controversial game, available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, not only broke records in gaming but also made more money in its first week than any Hollywood blockbuster in its opening week.
Despite a high cover price — the average price in SA stores is around R700 — it has been flying off the shelves.
The game revolves around a character called Niko Bellic, fresh off the boat from some unnamed, war-ravaged Eastern European hellhole. Niko and his cousin, Roman, find themselves sucked into the criminal underworld of Liberty City.
