Time for a small upgrade to my graphics card, and I'm wondering if those who have experience of some can offer comparisons.

- Mostly normal app use on 19" LCD.
- Game-wise, only Guildwars and Neverwinter Nights 2.
- I currently have an Nvidia 6600GT 128MB
- Vista and XP.

Options:
Nvidia 8500GT 256MB
Nvidia 8500GT 512MB (does the extra RAM make any difference to anything?)
Maybe 8500GT with 256MB DDR3 RAM; this is stretching it, money-wise.
ATI HD2400XT 256MB
ATI HD2600 Pro 256MB

Hmm...looks like a Foxconn 8600GT-256 might be in the price range too.

I have no experience with the ATI cards at all; I'm a little disenchanted with Nvidia at the moment though.

Probably to run on Gigabyte motherboard with Intel chipset (G31, perhaps).

Suggestions? Tips?

yes buy a 3850 its a little more but believe me those cards should not be allowed to sold for gaming

Forget about any Nvidia 8600GT series card, they are dog slow.

Get a ATI 3650. They are the same price (R800 odd), but perform the same as a 8600GTS.

How are the ATI drivers, etc? The 3650 certainly seems like an option.

Thanks for all the input, guys. The 3650 is looking like a really attractive option, so I may well go that way. Any thumbsuck idea of how much faster it is than a 6600GT? I can't find any comparative reviews.

At a rough estimate I would say 'noticeably' :D

You'd probably find much less of a performance increase with older games, but it's difficult to pit them against each other, because the newer card is designed for newer games (obviously). As such, we'd need some way of having the 6600 run directx 10
