Graphics Card

8600gts!

IMO for gaming the 8600GTS is a better option, but then again the 8600GT can kick some tail at 1024*768 no AA or AF :)

could always wait for the revision to come out from ati/nvidia, maybe to just go and buy a dx10 card isn't the smartest move for now - since seems both nvidia and ati have issues with their cards and from some game dev's dx10 isn't all the glory that its meant to be

but,
u3 and crysis will set the mark again... ;)

Hmmm... the thing is, the 8600gts is in a very different price bracket. Yes, this is the first dx10 cards to come out, so there's no surprise that they are kinda bad, but i think it was the fx series which sucked and then the6x00 series can out to kill the competition

The problem is the longevity of the card. Now that there's dx10 cards across all price groups, you'll start to see quite a few more dx10 only games, maybe in the next 6 months or so.

I speak for myself, but I'd rather have a capable card that'll last me a year or two, than a hot card now that'll only play selected titles in a few months. Ask the guys that bought x800's recently . . .

8600GTS 256Mb GDDR3 or a Gainward 8600GTS 512MB GDDR3 :)

Unless you are still stuck in the wonderful AGP world like me :o

dam... Um, if you REALLY afraid of the Dx10, But the midrange cards blow chunks (the 8600gts AND the HD2600...) then bite the bullet and get a Nvidia 8800gts 320mb, It's about R3000 and it kicks some ass! in fact I'm getting one and if you read the reviews, they are very good! they seem to be able to run max everything @ 1284 x 1024 and coz anything higher then that is well, impractical(and my LCD monitor only goes up to 1284 x 1024) , and you paying for future proofing, which means that in 6 months time, you won't have to worry about dx10 games. The funny thing is, that coz the 8800's aint really meant for dx9, they'll do better @ dx10 games.

But it's you're money, and if you can get a 8800gts 320mb, you'll see that there's nothing better on the market.

And remember there's always overclocking, so you could push the little bastard to over it's big brother's speeds and then there's no stopping it!!!

I went ahead and got a well priced 8600GTS as a stop gap until 2nd gen DX10 cards hit the market in 2008. By then games will be fully using DX10 shaders and better driver improvements will make it worthwile.

At least the 8600GTS is similarly powered to the 7900GS and amazingly surpasses it in some games ( ET:QW beta comes to mind ). But overall i think a 8800GTS is also a worthwile purchase if you get it at a good price <R3k.

Also a lot of the gaming performance depends on your CPU, as finally we are seeing upcoming games that benefit from dual cores like UT3. :)

Had a look around for 8800's and found two.

XFX nVidia GeForce 8800GTS XXX Edition - 640MB - PCI-E : R4681

XFX nVidia GeForce 8800GTX - 768MB - PCI-E : R5303

Is the 768MB one that much better?

I dont have enough time to get the links, will do that later.

Guess ill have a look around at the 8800's then.

Wot u mean impractical? Just coz ur monitor's small it makes it impractical?

well... I'm just saying that most people don't actually go over 1280 x1024, I got a 19" screen, so it's not small, but if you got a 1600x1200 screen, then ya, it will still just about get there will everything full, and if not, the card overclocks like a BEAST GRRR!!! you can get it to 650mhz core(stock:500mhz) and memory to 2000mhz(stock:1600mhz) and thats not most of the 8800gts 320mb cards available.

Um, rather find a 8800gts 320mb, It's almost the power of the 640mb but it's cheaper, yes the 768mb is better but it's got more stream processor's... and you won't see any performance increase between that and the 640mb, because you need a KILLER cpu it lower the bottlenecking

a web site thats got all the right links:www.jump.co.za/Search/8800gts 320/

Lets see what I have so far for my PC:

LCD 21" Acer, max resolution: 1400x1092 (around about there)
AMD Athlon64 x2 6000+ Dual Core CPU - Socket AM2 R1768
MSI AMD K9N SLI Platinum Motherboard - Socket AM2 R1343
2xOCZ Platinum Gaming Memory - DDR2-800MHz -1GB R1530

Now my max for graphics card is around R5000, suggestions?

Wow, where are you getting the 6000+ for R1768?

If you have R5000 for the graphics card, you might as well go with the GTX 768MB card, it's not the same as that GTS 640MB btw, a different model. If you don't want to spend that much, then the next best is to get a 320MB GTS, only R3000.

There isn't really anything else to go for unless you believe in the 2900XT... you might want to read some reviews then.
