Green light in jozi sky

Definately not a metorite

It is simply not possible that was was seen was a meteorite because two weeks ago here in Cape Town a huge number of people also reported the exact same object.

BREAKING NEWS: A bright light was spotted in the sky around SA last night, but another shiny object was seen Sunday morning that brought much joy and smiles to South Africans!

A bright shiny object has been spotted in the sky above South Africa. It is thought to be a star which is at the centre of the solar system, more commonly known as the Sun. The energy from its sunlight is thought to support almost all life on earth and apparently plays a huge role in the mood of the earthlings. The Sun had been missing over South Africa for approximately 7 days.

Ha Ha if you really want to nit pic
WTF? what is that? if not the same as Jozi?
But to contribute to this post, You guys sure it was a meteor and not some um real prawns in a round glowing ball that crashed into the union buildings or something? any new pot holes in jhb or pta?
lol just asking....

we were out in warmbaths for the weekend... we were sitting around a fire drinking then all of a sudden at about 11pm it felt like midday. we all went dead quiet and then saw the trail . it was the freakiest thing i've experienced. we were waiting 4 a mushroom cloud. no1 we spoke to today knew anything about it... we didn't think we were that intoxicated!

"The chances of anything coming from mars are a million to one", he said. You know the classic The War of the Worlds also started with a green flash in the sky. ;)

ok question is has anyone expereinced this before ... The older guys specifically ... It does seem a lil freaky if you ask me ...

Meteor & Earth quake

Saw same bright light at 10:55pm here on Botswana border (northern Limpopo) followed by huge "thunder" and "earthquake" at 11pm. Earth trembled and house rattled (some new cracks appeared). Couldn't find any sign of meteor on farm this morning but it had to hit us anywhere from here to Limpopo river. All farmers in 5km radius heard the explosion but only we felt the earth shaking.

Also saw about a month ago similar meteor burning in the sky (much smaller)but dissapeared (burnt out) over Botswana. No explosion was heard that time so I guess the one on the 21st did hit the ground somewhere close.

New Spins:
1# Maybe the Americans are toying with us... then later ask us to help assist/fund their space programs... Zumalema is foolish enough too :D

2# Maybe they got Roswell's space craft to work (from area 51)... and fly over Jozi... looking for prawns... ;)

3# Maybe they've come to save us... and take Zumalema away... confused by his brigades blue lights

2 Sightings in a week.. future enough for me... lets see if more come in the week ahead
If there are more... then I'll be watching the sky a litttttle more eagerly

Maybe Nostradamus was right again... big one in 2012 (21st Dec?)... or was it 2010 .. ooh

"What people saw last night was almost certainly a meteor," Claire Flanagan an astronomer at the Johannesburg Planetarium said.

People saw a bright "greenish, bluish" light heading towards Pretoria at about 11pm on Saturday night.

"It moved over the Gauteng Province towards Limpopo... it travels very fast and was about 90 kilometres up," said Flanagan.

The meteor was a hot topic of discussion in the forum on mybroadband.co.za.

"I saw a light flash the sky at about 8pm, at first I thought I was imagining it, but my friend also saw it," wrote someone who saw the meteor.

"... Maybe it’s people getting abducted by aliens...I walked in the house looked out [and] the sky was lit. It looked how it normally [does] at 5am."

Another wrote: "I [saw] it too in Hartbeespoort dam. Almost looked like daylight for a few seconds, not sure if it was a meteor or not... pretty cool..."

Others claimed to have heard and seen a "bright explosion".

"I was in Lonehill sitting outside with some friends at around 11pm when my buddy noticed flashes in the distance. After he pointed, we looked up and that's when the sky lit up like day for a second or two. The sky actually went blue."

Flanagan said if a bang was heard, it meant that the meteor had disintegrated in the sky.

"The speed which it was travelling at would have caused it to burn and then disintegrate," she said.

Another user on the website said: "I think you guys should relax. It’s Wikus Van der Merwe and his prawns," in reference to the South African-made movie 'District 9' which sets Johannesburg as the home of alien creatures.

Flanagan said that if the meteor had landed it would not have caused a major impact.

She could say how big it was as it was unexpected, and not connected with any kind of shower, but said the planetarium would be investigating the incident.

Can you confirm the accuracy of the clock on the video?

This may prove useful later if astronomers want to pin down the exact time of the flash.

I pressume so. It takes the computer time and that seems correct. Does it not update from the web?

If you're connected to the web 24/7, then the time should be very accurate. Windows synchronises at least once a week with the time server.

We also saw the light in Naaboomspruit, pretty hard not to see it, the bushveld was pitch black, note that the colour seems to be changing depending how far it had traveled, we got a stunning colouring of blue, then yellow and orange colouring for about 5 sec then as fast as it appeared it dissappeared. But guys in Joeys say they saw blue and green?
