Being new to the area (Sunninghill) I was ecstatic today when I received a flyer right outside my complex from Greencom about Fibre to home. Anyone ever heard of them? The deals seem amazing!

Waiting for them to install a 50Mbps link for one of my clients in Glenferness (Expect to be up in the next 2 weeks). I have spent quite a bit of time chatting to the guys from Greencom and my impression of them as a service is provider is very good so far.
I'll post progress & first impressions of the service as soon as something happens.
I don't want to speak on their behalf, so confirm with them, but if you're in a complex, they may have a requirement for a minimum number of subscribers in the complex to make the trenching & civils work worthwhile.

Hi Guys ,

I am a director of Greencom and we are indeed rolling out in Sunninghill. You will see the fibre routes being created and our construction team is currently at Tana Road. With regards to Glenferness we are live and planing the connectivity to the clients who have signed up.

More info and contact details on www.greencom.co.za and we also have suburb sites www.suninghillfibre.co.za and glenfernessfibre.co.za

Feel free to contact me at any time if you require more info and our roll out plans in other areas.

Thats for the clarification!
I live in a complex in Tana Road. How will complex's work when it comes to uptake? Will I have to go door to door convincing people to convert to fibre so I can also get my fix :p?

Hi I believe the Sunninghill Community Ratepayers Association have been working on FTTH and are making an announcement on this at the end of February. Might be worth waiting to see what they say as they represent the area and apparantly have done a lot of homework on this

Just got this email from them:

Dear Sunninghill Resident,

The response to our flyer to bring Fibre-to-the-Home in your area has been phenomenal. Thank you for your interest so far.

Our approach in Sunninghill:

Greencom have existing fibre infrastructure along the major routes in Sunninghill and are continuing expanding this. Our target launch date is currently the 1st March starting with those complexes with the highest uptake. We will together with our Channel Partner Kiklo engage with you, the various Body Corporates and Home Owner Associations as well as continue high visibility marketing in the area.

We are aiming for a 15 - 20% initial uptake per complex to ensure project viability. We encourage you to kindly refer interested friends and neighbours to register at www.greencom.co.za

If you are a Body Corporate or HOA member we would like to meet with you to drive the message and to assist with acquiring the required uptake.

Please expect a call from Kiklo in the next couple of days who will explain the process going forward.

Kind regards,

The Greencom Team

Hi Paul,

What is the fair use policy for greecom fibre? Will there be any restrictions regarding p2p?

A quick update on my client's installation in Glenferness :

The fibre is in the building, professionally installed and routed the way we wanted it, just waiting on "The Terminator" (nice guy who's going to splice the pigtails on to the end) and the CPE device ...

More updates to follow, getting close now :)

Thanks Q-tech,

How did they bring the fibre into the property trenches or pole?

What equipement is installed on the clients side i.e. modem etc.

Please take some photos of the installation if you can.

In Glenferness, the whole installation is run on existing telephone poles. In our case, they followed the current copper line from the street pole to an existing pole between properties and then into the building. Greencom gives you the option to trench the cable from the street into your building, but the cost/labour of trenching would be for your own account.

That's interesting I wonder if the existing poles belong to telkom.

I don't want to speak on Greencom's behalf and @paulcolmer can correct me if I'm wrong, IIRC Greencom has either bought or leased the existing poles in Glenferness from Telkom.

That's great, I hope they do the same in Sunninghill. It will make the installation at my property so much easier.

Unfortunately for you, I don't think they have similar deals anywhere else - the photo above shows good ol' fashioned trench digging in Sunninghill ...

Still going to wait for the Ratepayers Announcement on Monday or Tuesday next week. I have never heard of Greencom, except i believe they only registered as a company in November last year and before that were called 2 Oceans Network which no longer exists?

All we can do it pray that they don't go for Vodacom or one of the crazy expensive ones!
