GSM/GPRS Modem

AFAIK Nokia PC Suite s/w only supports Widcomm Bluetooth version 1.4.*+. The s/w that came with my b/t dongle was version 1.3.*, and I had endless problems, then I noticed there was a newer version of the Nokia PC Suite & min b/t requirements...

Guess I will need to contact my dongle manufacturer and get them to provide me with updated drivers :)

If it's Gigabyte (which mine is) then this is where I got the update:
http://tw.giga-byte.com/Communication/Support/Driver/Driver_List.htm
You will probably have to uninstall Nokia PC Suite (make backups of the .mdb files first etc), then uninstall the existing Bluetooth, then install the new Bluetooth, then install the latest Nokia PC Suite version for your phone - don't use the s/w on the Nokia CD - it is probably outdated already.

I am running the latest PC Suite, will try get the latest Widcomm and see what happens. Use the "serial link" via bluetooth works fine but can be a bit irritating at times. Will Check it out and update

remember you have to set your phone up as a modem FIRST. you need to install the software that came with your phone.

actually guys i got the laptop and phone gprs working now. i dialled *98*1# instead of *99 or 98. it woorked. the others didnt. so try it if yours in giving trouble.

So any other PCMCIA 3G retailer apart from the very expensive Expansys card (R3k)?

BTW what is the technology behind's Vodacom 3G, is it UMTS? Are all UMTS devices the same, I don't want to buy the wrong card...

Ok I just phoned Customer Care ( 082 155
) and spoke to Mr
Conie Von Kullwitz. He said prepaid 3g is not an option for data, only video calls. What gives?

vodacom3g can correct me on this, but thats rubbish. GPRS works just fine on prepaid & 3G should as well.

Data is treated the same regardless of transport. 3G & GPRS are the same thing from a "system" perspective.

I think Conie Von Kullwitz needs a smack.

But as I said vodacom3g can correct me on that. ;)

As per usual, the forum members are correct and the call desk need to be educated. :o

A lot of confusion comes in when talking about the bearer (i.e. how you connect via CSD, GPRS or 3G) and the bundles you can use on top of these.

Both pre-paid and contract customers can use GPRS or 3G, it's more a function of the device you have that will limit you. You must have a 3G capable device such as a 3G phone (E1000, etc.) or a 3G data card to get 3G speeds.

So even if you're a pre-paid customer, as long as you have a 3G device you can use 3G services, both video calls and data access.

To do this you MUST have your SIM enabled for 3G data. It's not a special SIM. Your normal 2G SIM will work fine. You must just call 111 and have it activated.

Initially there was talk that you need the 64K SIM for 3G. Not true.

Once you have 3G access, the bundles comes in and it's here where there is a difference today. The current BUNDLES (where you pay upfront for a certain amount of data) are only applicable to contract customers, for now at least.

Pre-paid customers currently pay the out-of-bundle rate @ R2/Mb.

So, in short, 3G data is available to pre-paid customers but not the bundles.

wamatt -

Yes Vodacom 3G is UMTS.

Have you tried to buy a Vodafone 3G card from a Vodashop?

Please remember that these data cards are a GSM/UMTS device like any other mobile phone and as such go through a very stringent certification process before being endorsed for use on the Vodacom network.

Every new terminal goes through this testing process and it amazing how many fails.

No, I was hoping to have some sort of selection. Does the vodashop one come with an antenna?

Does anyone have any price/performance data to compare it with any othe device available locally?

Thanks that clears things up a bit. So can we expect prepaid data bundles in the future?

Yes, pre-paid bundles will be available in the near future.

All Vodacom 3G data cards will ship with an antenna. Existing customers should start getting theirs this week.

Vodacom3g I bought a 3G data card for cash on Saturday and it did not come with an antenna. Does this mean I will also get an antenna? I tried to ask when purchasing the card but nobody seemd to know.

If fact it was quite a task to find a shop who knew about the cash option. Every shop said it was only available on contract but on persisting 3 shops could infact sell the card for cash and then only 2 had stock.

what did you pay for it?

R2999 but I am sure if you live in JHB there should be some competition and can get it cheaper.

You should get an antenna. This week all contract holders will get a letter entitling them to the free antenna. I assume you're not going to get such a letter, so please PM me all your contact details and I'll arrange for one to get to you.

Would you mind sharing what you paid for your card? Maybe in a new thread where the forum can compare pricing.
