If you have it, can you please PM the name of the person who came to your place? I'd like to check on the congestion issue. If there's a lot of GPRS activity in your area you will start to share the timeslots.

Secondly, I'd like to do some throughput tests with you where we can pin a number to the (lack of) performance you're seeing.

I'll PM you with a test procedure.
 
This might be slightly off topic. I don't know if there's a 'trick' with this, but i've chucked my telkom related stuff and now solely use GPRS for email and home browsing on my laptop and desktop pc. Now using my cellphone i often get this
"tick tick tick" interference effect [you know when youre cell is right next to some speakers when you receive a call?]. With GPRS this is ongoing continiously as you receive data . I don't notice it with my laptop at all, but my desktop..geez, even my screen is distorting from the signal.

So yes, i can move my cellphone around and try to find some sort of 'quiet' spot, but it's rather annoying with infra-red and data cable limits. How does a GPRS/GSM modem work regarding this? I mean if this little USB modem is plugged straight into my desktop's usb port, immobile , will it at least not mess my speakers and screen ? [which will be right next to it]

I can now see why they want us to turn off our cellphones on airplanes :P

Or is there some magic trick with this? What about 3G phones? Will i be having a distorted screen pain too? [or having to turn my phone at some "special" angle all the time?]
 
The interference that you are seeing is probably due to unscreened cables around your Desktop PC...speaker cables, VGA cable, etc... The solution is to screen them or replace them with screened cables...this is bit of a mission though.:(

Lol, ok so it's at least something on my end and not a function of the modem/cellphone [although that would've been nice , if possible]. Don't they sell
screens/ speakers with screened cables these days? [since i'll add that on my list of upgrading requirements then :P]
 
Alternately, if you improve your signal the phone will transmit less power causing less interference. The interference is also a lot less on 1800 MHz I have found.

I recently installed a pair of Aopen speakers that draw its power from the USB. They are the worst, I have to be more than 2 m away from the pc with my cell phone to avoid the interference on the speakers.

On the Mywireless forum some guys have used a big cooking pot to put the modem in. It boosts your signal by a few dB. Logically, this could screen the interference from your pc equipment. But I'd try ic's suggestion first.
 
Well I am not sure about 3G interference levels, but in terms of a GPRS data card and laptop the disturbance is minimal, obviously there is no cabling to cause problems, your lcd is not going to jump and the speakers receive no inteference (im sure speaker placement could affect this)

However it does still "tick tick tick" away with other equipment, not nearly as bad as a regular cell phone, buts it is still noticible.

I just wondered if anyone has bought one of the GPRS cards from Expansys.... How does delivery etc work, are there any customs duties to be paid, most importantly, does the product work well here????

Just an update, the GPRS cards have halved in price at expansys Now R400
 
Just to add to that, a mail received from expansys regarding delivery to SA

Dear Customer,

I'm sorry to have to inform you that we are no longer able to organise delivery of any goods to addresses in South Africa.
We have been forced to take this decision because of the high cost and complexity of South Africa import duty rules.
If you wish to do so you are welcome to have the goods collected from our Manchester office by your courier (we recommend FedEx, UPS or DHL)
We will not charge you any tax or shipping costs, but you will be responsible for the duty on importation to South Africa.

They have a number of options, but have not personally looked for PCMCIA option, but definatelly have USB, although again I have not looked for USB powered one before (all the ones I have need external power)..... but they good, good products, good price (and no I do not work for them)

Else contact them as well, they VERY helpful, even when I was still with iBust, they tried to find external antenna solution for me
