its not power that will result in you reaching the top speed, but more the gearing ratios, it will just take longer with less power, and the gear ratios as previously pasted suggested a true top speed of 230km/h

In my case, I really did not feel a 'punch' from hitting the airbag. It's not like hitting a wall. It's only inflated for a second or so before it deflates, leaving a white powdery mist in the car LOL. And my shades on the back seat.
 
There is a photo where the guy upper body is buried in the ground and lower body sticking out.
And clearly this guy was doing well over 200kph, very irresponsible. What's funny is, most of these guys get these VW cars on finance, drive like this, after death banks now bother their parents to get their money back.

Can't we all just be responsible in this country?

when your power developed at x rpm is less than what is needed to overcome drag at that speed, you find the top speed of the car.

So when you die in an accident, your insurance is basically useless? Nobody can initiate a claim on your behalf if you're dead?

GPS 240-260 yes.

But should be limited to 155mph like the other Germans.

Those gear ratios don't look quite right on final drive.

But then the newer ones are also 7-speed so for all we know that comes from the old 1.8T or even a Polo GTI.

VW triggers the airbag earlier than normal if it thinks there is someone in the seat and no seatbelt in use. So the "clever" people who sit over the seatbelt and have it plugged in get the normal airbag deployment, which deploys too late and they have a nice meeting with their windshield/dash.

Mine is older than that fortunately without the beep.

I cannot fathom how anyone would go to the effort of sitting on it instead of just putting it on.

You'd think I'm making this up, but it's 100% the truth

We have a couple as friends who both have their own vehicles and neither wear safety belts. The husband taught the wife to drive so naturally she inherited this behavious from him. They drive a Jetta and a Polo both from the early 2000's so not sure if they have any of these safety measures in place.

Something about the safety belt restricts their movement or some weird kuk like that. When I have to drive with him I make up some sort of excuse, hell I don't even know if their cars have safety belts!

But to actively plug it in and then sit on top of it so that it doesn't beep is special kind of retarded.

Worse still are people who have kids unbuckled in car. Never mind lack of car seats.

well without drag the top speed of this car as the gearing suggests is 230km/h, so with your explanation it will be less than 230km/h or equal, but not more

This +1000 my dad used to do it in their Mazda.

Just put the damn thing on, it's already got a feature telling you to please put it on. The least you can do is put it on, it doesn't even take 3 seconds :D

I knew someone who had taken the buckle from the backseat off and plugged it in their seat.
 
Okay I stand corrected.

The manual actually warns you to wear the seatbelt to avoid injury by the airbag as it will deploy regardless.

And further to this to assume the correct seating position to avoid accidents like in the case of Sinbad's link earlier.

Only further comment is that it does self-diagnonsis on the airbags and pre-tensioners upon startup.

I dont understand that kind of thinking. Then again, when I was a child it was almost the norm not to wear your seat belt. When we moved to New Zealand we found it very peculiar that the lady who picked us up at the airport would not drive without us putting on our seat belts. I am sure the feeling was mutual from her side, wondering WTF is wrong with these people.

Now I cant imagine driving or just being in a car as a passenger in a car without being buckled up.

An old mistaken belief that you can't be flung or hurt badly from the back - ya i learned that lesson the hard way

+1, I never used buckle up in the back seat as a kid, one accident with a rolled car and being ejected out the back window cured me of that.:(
