GTI accident

Looks like a Golf 7

Yep, just checked google. Looks like the speedo is from the 7 as well. OT, but surprised as I thought the speedo would have been more "digital" by now.

Regarding the ECU, at that impact, will the ECU actually still function?

Yes, we have had many of our vehicle tracking units survive brutal truck crashes.

The impact took the Armco barrier out along with the concrete that held it in place.

My BMW didn't deploy the passenger side due to the seatbelt not being worn (no occupants) but I guess not all cars are the same. In posting that I realised it's probably hard to judge anything with such an impact. If it's suppose to deploy it will with those forces :D

Could very well also deploy by accident in such an accident and not have been triggered by the car safety systems at all.

No, it's not because no seat belt was worn, it's because it did not detect anyone sitting on the seat. There is a sensor in the front seats.

There was no passenger in the car AFAIK.

And if a car's airbag does not deploy if the seatbelt isn't used, there is something wrong with the car.

By design a passenger airbag shouldn't deploy unless a seatbelt is worn and the seat is occupied.

Otherwise it's Iiterally motor dangerous than the dashboard itself and would be like hitting a concrete wall.

It will not deploy if it does not detect someone sitting on the seat, it's not about whether the seatbelt is used.

And no, I've been in a crash where the airbag deployed. Knocked my sunglasses off my face onto the back seat, but didn't really feel anything.

That's part of the discussion. Armco support posts are possibly not to spec wrt quantity/quality and distance they are spaced apart leading to the bridge parapet.

Well the spec would be for 120km/h.

Not 180km/h.

yes that's true speed, not whats shown on the clock, the top speed in your numbers compared to the pic sort of confirms that

it doesn't really matter which lower gear he was in, its just weird to be in the low gears at high revs for any duration of time

GTI speedo is out by less than 10%.

So it's definitely not 3rd gear as it's a pretty close ratio gearbox.

4th or 5th and I would go with 5th either way as it's more accurate higher in the speed range.

Were you wearing a seatbelt? Because then it did what it was supposed to do.

Most systems should take both into account these days.

As in seatbelt and occupancy.

But sure all cars aren't made equally, so there would be variation.

I know there are also single stage and multistage versions that operate differently.

No, I wasn't. At that stage in my life, I did not wear a seat belt when driving with the window open. (Yeah, fcked up, I know. Had something to do with feeling a bit vulnerable at intersections :o).

It was a BMW E46

Interesting.

I'll check tonight if I remember but I'm pretty sure my VW manual (also GTI so relevant here I guess) states it will not deploy without a seat belt.

It's after all why the seat belt has pretensioners built in to pull you away from the inflating bag.

After all airbags are a supplementary safety system not a primary one. That's exactly what the SRS bit stands for.

*****

But like I said earlier airbags can trigger accidentally on impact too. So could well happen even of the car didn't initiate it.

so the GTI can reach a top speed of 250km atleast if the indicated top speed is 280?
