Guide: How to get your importers code

Contacted Aramex Global shopper today, they said "if you ship more than 3 times a year you need to provide an Importers code"

What exactly do you need to write in your affidavit for proof of residence?
I wrote one and it was rejected :(
And no not one of those shady fskers can tell me why.

It seems for some stupid reason the importers code proof of residence requirement is stricter than anything else SARS related, why I don't know.

Do you think they will accept a proof of residence from my local councillor?
they accepted a vehicle insurance confirmation letter.

How things change......in '89 I went to an office in Pta armed with my ID.
Got GST number, importer/exporter code, CC registration number all in the space of an hour !!!!

I also only have Linkage Dashboard. I tried this link but it isnt working for me?
I'm not sure if it might have changed... It might also be necessary to be at the right place when pasting the URL into the address bar. (i.e. a new tab might not work)

Did you have a registered company? Did you have to do the whole registered representative before going ahead with this?

No, I registered in my own name.

I can't remember the rest of the details. It seemed to mostly match the rest of this thread...

Quick question regarding importers code. If I change my address, do I need to apply for a new code or just update my address on SARS profile? I'm not sure where or how to do this.

Just update your address, the code is linked to your ID not your address

Also wondering about the tax implications.
What tax implications? It's simply the difference between supplying your ID number when importing vs your importers number... And you're in a smaller pool at customs, so your stuff is cleared quicker. They have all your details on file.

You might get away with importing the odd low value item without duties if you're not registered, but for the time it sits at customs, it's just not worth it.

Have you tried a different browser?
I tried on multiple different browsers and devices, including my phone. Had a friend follow the exact same steps on my computer and it just worked for him. I'm just screwed and I don't know ow to resolve the issue.

Uninstall and reinstall Chrome and/or Firefox and try again.

I'm just a bit confused.

I followed the guide and received a " Registration Certificate" from SARS that state : "SARS has approved your application for registration as a Importer(local)".

There are a number of numbers/codes on the letter and I'm not sure which is the actual "importers code"

Registration Certificate no : CUSxxxxxxx - CUS followed by 7 numbers
Customs Code : CUxxxxxxxx - CU followed by 8 numbers.

I assume the latter is the actual Importers Code ?

I went through the importers code application process on the SARS website last week.

I found the efiling page layout a bit confusing initially, to get me to display my profile as "Organisation", but once I had it displaying as "Organisation" I completed the Importer (local) application and provided the required supporting docs as part of the online application process.

This morning I also received my Registration Certificate from SARS that state: "The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has approved your application for registration as a Importer (local)" in my RLA inbox on the efiling website. I was also able to download the registration certificate containing my CUxxxxxxxx customs code (which I pressure will be the importer's code to use).

Also , when I go to the "Customs" / "Registration Licensing Accreditation" section on the efiling site, the same CUxxxxxxxx number and a status of "ACTIVE" is shown, from where I can access the certificate and my associated details.

All in all, 8 days from start to finish.

Not as quick as some of the guys on here, but done nontheless.
