Guild Wars, questions...

ABIT OFF-TOPIC.
Hi there guys. It's all about connection at this point. I currently have a normal hellcom connection with infinite call enabled. It's not that bad and GW runs pretty well for the most part. At the end of the month i pay a bit more than i would if i had adsl but i can't get locked into a contract at the moment which is why i use infinite call. This morning i was at a friends house and he connected to GW for the first time in a week so he had that monster ownload to do. Thing is he never used his adsl because he slaughtered his cap last week thats why he has'nt been playing. Instead he used his mobile with a virgin mobile sim that i had given him. His connection was running an average of like between 6 and 13 kb per second. for the big download. And for this he pays a silly 50 per meg. Now why this bothers me is because i gave him the sim card and his connection is faster thatn mine. I run on telkom and it averages about 5kb/sec on a good day and sometimes drops down too 2 kb/sec. Now i ask you....is gprs faster than a land line or not cause i am really confused now and thinking of getting myself another virgin sim just to play guild wars because lets face it thats where most of my online time goes. Please guys i need some well informed opinions here.

Thanks Hybrid.

ADSL is still your cheapest connection option IMO. AFAIK you also do not sign a contract. I certainly don't have one, I am month to month.
You might just have to wait a while for the ADSL installation.

Theoretically GPRS will be faster than dial-up. Don't know which one you have though, have you got analogue 56k, ISDN, 64k or 128k?

I played GPRS until they launched HSDPA on Vodacom. It was very good up till that point, performance sucks on it now, very unreliable and unstable. Haven't tried it in a while tho.

hi lil
I am on a lowly 56k connection:( . But that performs just fine for guild wars. Like i said earlier i am constantly running gw at about 5kb per second. I am just stuck on what i saw this morning with virdin gprs comstantly running above 5 kb per second. am i correct in thinking that the higher the kb per second the better the gameplay will be as far as lag and stuff goes?

Thanks

You know, actually GPRS will be very close to 56k speeds, or should be, around 5-10K/bs.
8k is a speed that can be expected on both.

Yes, you are looking for high thruput = high kb = great GW experience :D

righto! that settles it. the minute mnp goes live i am jumping ship to virgin mobile. i would do i t now but i cant afford to change my number. Thats probably the mentality the more popular service providers are exploiting huh? lol

Thanks again lil.

I disagree that high kb/s is better for GW. I think a stable ping is more important, since lag is usually a ping jumping all over the place. So, I think dailup is better than anything wireless, including GPRS. 56K dailup is just a serious pain for updates.

MTN Gprs sucks Im afraid to report. On a good day I get 8kb per second, and on bad days 2kb per second (even this is enough to play reliably). The thing that does cause a problem however is the fact that it sometimes just stops communicating. I have left it for 30 minutes once, and it says Im connected, but there is no data transfer. My char just stands around like a idiot.

Another 56K GW player here. It was an enjoyably smooth experience, once I'd grabbed the full server image. Do this:

Make a copy of the Guildwars shortcut on your desktop, rename it to GW Update. Right click > properties > Change target to "D:\Games\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -image
(thanks to Luciora)

Now I have to go through it all again for some reason, after the big update recently
:(

This is a risky decision.
I will take wire over wireless anyday.
Wire is still inherently the better option, wireless is just so up in the air... :D

It is essentially the same thing... if you have stable ping you will have stable / high kb as well = good gaming

The moment you hit lag, ping will drop as will kb.

stable ping and high kb is comparingly linked.

Just do it properly. Get the updated gw.dat file from someone and simply replace it in your game directory.

Problem solved.

Unless you're a pedantic idiot who doesn't stop until their wireless is on par with, or as close to as possible, a wired service of similar nature/'speed'/stability...

Erm... Reflecting on that, I have just realised that I am a pedantic idiot. :D

ok - sooo when can i walk into Incredible Corruption and see the Nightfall Pre release on the shelf ?????????????

Played the Nightfall preview for a bit over the weekend...a lot of fun, and the Heroes concept works quite well. Good to see that ANet are pushing the game into new directions.
Looking forward to jumping on board when it releases - should be heaps of fun :)

Played the Dervish mostly - and I can see some very interesting builds coming out with that char type. The whole running lots of enchantments to fuel big combos could be seriously cool...time will tell ;)

Titles Question

I have a question: I was told that if you fight in the random arena in PVE ascalon or shiverpeaks and get 25 consecutive wins, you get a Gladiator title. Last night my team reached 32 consecutive wins, and we got no title. So with a bit of research on the internet it "seems" that you need 10 consecutive wins to get 1 track point, and you need 25 track points to get the first gladiator title. am I understanding this correctly?

And one more question: can you get these titles when you play PVE and go to ascalon or shiverpeaks random arena? Or do you need to start a PVP character and obtain the title that way?

Thanks.

I think only random and team arena counts for the gladiator title. 32 Wins should have given you three points towards your title. You should be able to use PvE characters to earn the title.

Anyone having MAJOR lag tonight on GW? Four of us from KZN are battling.

Hmm, a large portion of our guild is DBN based, they've all been moaning about lag. 1 or 2 GAU members too though I am not having any issues. On the odd occasion we all get a synchro lag spike, and in the middle of a GvG that is far from fun... :)
