And Alec *spit* Erwin is now quoted in the Sunday Independent (print edition) as not being aware that the mines had closed on Friday - as did the Eskom CEO.

Eskom CEO?? did he not give the order to the mines to shutdown? freaking circus it is.

This is the part that I was worried about:

The mining industry, which uses 15% of Eskom’s capacity, accounts for 7% of the economy, more than 30% of exports and more than 25% of foreign exchange earnings.

Unfortunately, about 60% of the economy was being effected before the mines were cut so the damage was just as bad, but the 25% of forex is going to be devestating.

There was another source that put mines at 16% of our GDP.

Eskom didn't tell them to shut down. They just indicated that they could not guarantee power. The mines chose to shut down because of safety concerns.

which is as good as telling them to shutdown, what mining house would risk underground mining when electricity cannot be guaranteed?

mandela must kicking himself when he hears the name mbeki aka the idiot

I'm affraid not. Madiba is enjoying the luxuaries of 'his struggle' just like the rest of them.

Tbone was his VP which he groomed to be our president. He was president when the white paper was issued 1998. These criminals responsible for all this cr@p the country is in were part of his party the ruling ANC when he was pres. The only difference is he got out before we reaped what he and his cronies sowed. Oh and the large dose of personal propaganda

Unless of course you believe he was this shining pilar of perfection who just happened to be surrounded by and worked with these criminals :o

Exactly - the mines were told that power was not guaranteed.
They put 2 and 2 together, and saw that if they were not guaranteed power, then there was major poo.
Major poo could mean 2 weeks or more of total blackout.
Does anyone really think anyone with a shred of decency would condemn thousands of people to being stuck 4-10kms underground for that length of time?

Before 1994 > White Power
After 1994 > Black Power
2008 > No Power

Have you ever met Mandela? He is one of the most inspiring people in the world. By all rights he should be bitter as hell like the rest of the ANC cronies but he is not. He is not worth billions like the rest of them. He even refused his salary while he was president if I remember correctly. He also castigated Mbeki's crowd for putting his face on pro Mbeki T-Shirts recently. You would do wise to no put him on the same page as Mbeki and the rest.

He did nothing to groom Mbeki. Mbeki was president in waiting for 3 years because he was elected head of the ANC while Mandela was president. The White paper was issued at the end of 1998 and Mbeki took over in 1999. When Mbeki took over, he replaced all of the existing ministers with his own choices.

Unless of course you believe he was this shining pilar of perfection who just happened to be surrounded by and worked with these criminals :o

Not perfection but a much better person then you and me. Mandela has done more towards unity in this country then anyone else. Mbeki has systematically being undoing this good in the country since he took over. All to keep the ANC in power and to make them stronger.

Tell you what, let me lock you up in prison for 26 years and see how you come out. I can guarantee it won't be anything like Mandela. Say what you want about any of the other politicians who have been raping this country but make sure of your facts before you critisize Mandela.

Oops I fear I challenged the untouchable :o

I dunno how somebody can have a mampara like Mbeki as VP and not realise he was a despot.

Zuma spent 10 years in prison for our freedoms too.

Yes all these criminals just suddenly popped out of the woodwork when Mbeki took office :o

Alan - it is easy to be conned.
We see what we want to see - Madiba is no different.
He spent years in jail and only heard about the actions of his "friends" via stories.
When he came out, he was happy. He had won freedom for his people, and he naturally saw only the good in others - thank heavens for that, or we may not be here today.

I feel sorry for him - he was sold up the river just as we were.
I remember being on the Grand Parade the day he was released - people were happy, and hopeful - white or black.
It was fun, and it was exhilarating, and we (white students, male and female), felt no fear for our lives.
How things have changed.

Why is it that these illustrious, noble African leaders fail to see a big picture?

It boggles the mind, what is wrong with them?

You no pay, it no fix. No fix, no work.

Why is that so hard to understand?

I dunno mixing with the likes of Mbeki, Zuma and co and not picking up on the fact that they were criminals and despots seems very far fetched. Then again he did manage to marry one. :o

Luckily for him he is not judged by the company he kept

Dont throw away the other one...He still beats them all...The one that has 27 YEARS prison experience? :D

He probably was well aware of the situation but there is nothing that he or anyone else could have done. SA politics works where the ruling party decides who rules. Once Mbeki took over the ANC, it was inevitable that he would run the country. I never once saw Mandela use race to polarise the country in the name of votes or defending the indefensible. Mbeki, on the other hand, uses it as his first course of action.

Edit - Sorry for going off the deep end. My father (who was quite a racist if I might say so) met Mandela at a party in 1999 and it changed his whole perception of the man. He spoke quite a bit with Mandela and I discussed it with him afterwards. The thing he kept going back to was how he could not understand why Mandela was not even in the slightest bit bitter. All Mandela was concerned about was other people and felt that he had a great opportunity to help.

I always believed that the ANC would follow the previous government and steal a little. There is always enough pie to go around if you just skim off the top. Little would I realise I would be so wrong. My wife kept saying that I was too trusting.
