THESE are the people to blame for plunging South Africa into darkness.
President Thabo Mbeki, Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin and former Eskom chief executive Thulani Gcabashe and his successor, Jacob Maroga, ignored the signs of impending disaster for 10 years.

Going to buy the ST for the first time in a decade.
Everyone buy a copy today - show your support to them!

But Maduna was replaced by Mlambo-Ngcuka — who insisted there was no looming crisis. In 2003 she went as far as saying she had been assured by Gcabashe that South Africa would never run out of power.

The stupidity is mind blowing! I am speechless.

Very good reading...Well thats sums up the whole situation...Now the question is: "How are we going to get on the right track?"...And the answer is very simple. Replace the "morons" with educated/experienced ppl...Ppl who have MANAGED to keep this country going these past years and didn't have the "luxury" of the gravy train and maintained a high education level in schools etc...Bring back the "Veterans"...That is...If they're still prapared to take up their Ex-jobs..

Simple really - they should all resign.

I was hoping for a gradual easing into the Zuma presidency but Mbeki needs to show there is honour amongst [-]thieves[/-] politicians and fall on his sword now.

Also another thing...They "lowered" the education level of schools because some ppl wouldn't have been able to pass. This in turn is THE MOST "DUMMEST" decision i have ever heard of. Instead of lowering the standards, they should have kept the standard, but just add idditional lower grades per grade ( ie Standard grade, lower grade or beginners grade ). What happens now is, the pupils with matric ( most of them ) has an "actual" certificate lower than St8. These guys must now go into a world and manage "high level standard" jobs...and now?
Just to give an example...My niece is in grade 8 ( st 6 ) and guess what they started of learning in the Technology class...They started learning about ( and this is NO joke ) Spoons...Forks...Knifes...Can you believe it??..This now is TECHNOLOGY!!!...This is f'n CAVE-MEN technollogy

In a previous post I was accused of making a "racist" statement with a similar comment.
I just used an IQ figure in place of the word "morons" ...
Everyone in this poor country had an opportunity to a good education, but instead of education, most chose violence and burned down the schools that was built by the government of the day...

This is what happens when you hire 'uneducated' people to do the job of 'educated' people and still pay them big bucks, because this way, they can enjoy the cash for a few years and when all hell hits the fans, they just 'pass the buck' (or try too)

It think, what might add to the "frustrations" of ppl, is the fact that they BELIEVE and TRUST the govt...then in addition to that, they ( the ppl who care ) try their BEST to make something out of nothing in this country, and then, at the end of the day, you realise you were taken for a FOOL!!!...Hopes, Dreams, all down the f^ckin drain, all due the mentallity of a couple of DUMMIES!

Go Sunday Times! Nice to see someone finally sticking it to them. Going to buy one too, need something to put on my dart board. :D

Agree 100%. They've already admitted blame so there's no dispute there. The DA should call for a vote of no confidence in Mbeki and his cabinet. Sure it'd never pass but at least it makes a clear statement.

:D:D:D

I am sooooooo buying the ST later.
Hopefully they have not sold out yet.

Even if they have sold out at least it'll be good for them. No wonder Mbeki wants to silence them. I'm just waiting for Zuma to accuse them of being unpatriotic.

bring on zuma!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ppl may NOT like him but im telling you now he will kick ass and get this country right

mandela must BE kicking himself when he hears the name mbeki aka the idiot

You dropped a large number of words from that - I am sure your meaning is not what you intended.
And the punctuation is awful - but I am used to that :D

As much as I don't like or trust Zuma could it get any worse?

The reality is that it has taken the ANC only 13 years to conjure up a monumental cock-up.
Closing the mines, incredible. Not even the most die hard right winger would've even considered this as a possiblity when the 'Swart Gevaar' took control.
It is hard to imagine the damage this will do to the average worker.
I wonder who in government made healthy returns on the gold and platinum prices following this unprecedented action?

The ANC inherited a power utility that was well run. Yes most of the population were not fortunate at the time to have power but in the greater scheme of things that is neither here nor there.
The ANC knew they were going too rollout power to the masses, they knew exactly at what rate the economy was going to grow. They planned it for goodness sake and even stalled growth in certain sectors through regulation (telecoms) and only let it move at a pace comfortable to their communist minds.
The ANC put their lackeys in charge of this great power utility and other parastatals, and they paid themselves handsomely for doing, frankly, nothing.

The ANC continued to live in denial and continually LIED to the public and foreign investors, all to keep the gravy going for them, but not once stopping to think of the future consequences of their inaction.
Not even 18 months ago Thabo Mbeki emphatically denied that there was any power crisis, current or looming. The man must live in La La land behind his multi million rand wall.
Alec Erwin continues to lie with statements like "the country is a victim of it's own success". 'BS' of the highest order, we are a victim of poor management and no planning.

Despite all the failures of the ANC, or the shoddy management put in place to window dress society, their lack of vertebrae in taking on their masters and forcing some future power planning, Eskom was good enough for 13 years of economic growth before the utility could take no more and wilted to the cancer that is demand!
This all while the ANC mothballed parts of ESKOM and drastically reduced the workforce.

We see similar trends in telecommunications. Why do you think South Africans are sitting with 3 gig caps and pedestrian speeds in the global internet arena.
It is the same reason why our roads are falling to pieces and why our rail infrastructure has all but disappeared.

Yet nobody is fired or taken to task. The people that have orchestrated this mess will continue to curry favor with the masses, which in itself is a most explosive recipe for disaster.

In the end some question beg answering.
1. Seeing as though the government and Eskom have accepted 'dual' responsibility for this shambles, I am sure investors and the public would like to know when it became apparent to the government that we were about to turn off the lights, literally.

2. Why was there no fore warning for the public and investors of this impending darkness, the country just went from one day with power on, to a power off situation.

3. Did ESKOM execs even comprehend the colossal bugger up about to hit the nation or was it to much to compute for their 'collective' IQ.

4. If they did, why were the public not informed.

5. If they did not, why are they still employed.

6. Why are we still exporting electricity while our mines, the backbone of our economy are standing idle with thousands of workers and their families going without pay.
Somewhere along the line you have to say to hell with SADC and look after your own.

Yes - we could become a "province" of Zimbabwe.
No, that is not likely to happen - but it does show that things can always get worse.

Nicely said Sneeky

In regards to point 6, it is millions, not thousands (of workers and their families).
The Star claimed 5 million people are directly reliant on mine work for their livelihood, with 600 000 employed on mines - I have not been able to verify that, although the figures from the top handful of mines alone were over 100 000.
