Guitar question

Oh and also don't pay more than R200 an hour/lesson ... you'll be being ripped off horribly!

everything sounds good with an acoustic? what sort of acoustic do you play and where can I get one?!?!?!

pffft ... You have more chance of playing something and having it sound decent than doing so in th beginning with an electric ... I have heard of many people giving up before they get going due to the electric guitar showing them no potential ... if you know this up front, you'll be fine.

Thats what I meant, its a lot more difficult getting a good sound out of an electric then an accoustic (at beginners level), so its easier to hear the fruits of your hard work and labour in the beginning

Pitbull I don't teach ... plus my style of music I highly doubt would be the same as yours :D

If you go to a place like marshalls, they can recommend very good teachers.

Damn it.

And here I thought you teach me Guitar and I could repay you with my body :p :D But honestly, is playing guitar really as relaxing and satisfying as they make it out to be ?

Yeah but it can also be very frustrating if you don't see any results ...

Start with something easy, go buy some beginner books they really help (I taught myself to play in the beginning). Very daunting, but was fun ... Yeah guitar is great, good fun and when you find someone to jam with its even better!

I started with a nylon string guitar before bothering with the electric guitar. Even a nice little R500 jobbie is good for jamming ;). Funny part, at the end i enjoy my nylon string still more , primarily because i can play it anywhere, no cables etc. Obviously a steel string classic guitar has a major superior sound though...as was mentioned you get amazing sound out of a classic/acoustic guitar and not necessarily the same sound out of an electric.

I mean if you even remotely want to play Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" (the solo part) , you just won't get that "neck hair rising" feeling on an electric, you got to play it on an acoustic.....and i mean EVERYONE at some stage wants to master that song...seriously.....on electric it's just meh...

As mentioned, remember you need an Amp for your electric.

I played that this morning diabolus ... what guitars do you have?

One of each type, but i never got attached to any specific brand , primarily because i liked to hop around the guitar types. All 6-string of course.

So it's basically a Nylon Acoustic [they're generally the cheaper type of guitar] , a Steel Acoustic and an Electric. Two of them Yamahas (C45 and no idea what model the other is), but i bought 2nd hand , so never broke my pocket with these purchases (+-R1000-R1500 per guitar)

Here's a nice shop for some pricechecks:

I enjoy Yamahas, I am looking at getting a Yamaha nylon string, cut away with a pick-up in it ... amazing to play!

Hola Peeps.

So I want to get an electric guitar and learn how to play it, all just for fun. Now I have seen 2 different types of electric guitars. Just the normal 6 string and then a six string with a lever at the bottom of the guitar.... What is the difference ? I guess the lever helps you to string notes and make funny noices :p

Also which is best, a normal 6 string or a 4 string Bass guitar ?

Yo dude..

If you're planning on going for lessons, and are a beginner, might I suggest not going straight into acoustic? Chances are that you'll struggle if you ever play an acoustic after that, whereas if you do it the other way around (learn on acoustic then move to electric), it's much much easier. Electric strings will feel like butter :)

Also, R200/hour seems a bit steep. Look around for music students, or someone teaching in small music shops, they tend to be a bit cheaper, in the R75-R100 range.

Like I said in a previous post, anything over R200 is ripping you off ... I pay R150 for an hour, and I get professional service from a guitarist very very VERY well known in SA.

As for the R75 a lesson teachers, i've had one ... After 2 lessons I felt like throwing the guitar away and buying a triangle. You do unfortunately get what you pay for, and there is nothing like having a lesson with a student who doesn't have patience, or knowledge on tutoring a person in the correct way as to get that person to reach their full potential or at least walk out of the lesson happy.

It depends if you want to throw out a couple of chords at home to Pub songs, or if you want to actually sit and be able to play a song by ear.

Just to add, I have walked out of a lesson very unhappy and feeling like i'm going backwards, as apposed to how I walk out now ... beaming and so excited for the next :) .. you will more than likely go through 1 or 2 teachers before you find one you're happy with. What area are you in? I can ask my teacher for a few numbers.

You can get pretty far on your own though, i'd say Guitar is one of THE easiest intruments to learn and get something going. You don't even need to read music like the Piano stuff [not initially anyhow]. Those TABS and CHORDS that you find on the web is like those Casio Keyboards with the lights which you just need to follow and press the key at the right time for the right length ..if you know what i mean.

Get a book with all the chords and "presses" and all you do initially is practice the main ones , then you move on to the bar-chords where you need to hold down a few more strings. Once you're there you can pretty much strum anything simply by getting the chord-combos of songs...you'd be surprised how simple some bands' stuff are , or rather how "their sound" is actually contained in like 3 very simple chords that are used interchangeably in all their songs. For example Cranberries use a combo E and E-Major/Minor and A everywhere...it's amazing how you can get the "cranberry sound" just by using those in the right sequence. Those chords are also of the easiest to learn.

From there i'd consider classes for the more technical stuff like technique , reading "real" music and timing and other types of guitar play [playing chords is just one type, playing riffs/solo is another story] ....etc etc.

Well I personally think its awesome to sit and play something, so good luck! :) I hope you come right with a guitar. An electric might not be the best way to first start, but if thats what you want then its what ya want :P

Agreed. I thought that when 'bull first posted this. A nice mid range solid top Cort acoustic is great to learn on.

haha sure, if you say so. How long have you played? oh? you haven't? oh .. yeah you know what youre talking about :D

Classy post Kitten.

Goes without saying, no one is allowed to touch my baby, or look at it directly

That's silly. It's made to be played. Let someone else have a go and show you some new stuff. It's awesome to see your axe in action! Makes you proud.

only with velvet gloves, pure gold plated plectrum, and you can only play by looking in a mirror to see the guitars reflection.

Hey, I don't make the rules, its what nature intended

Ur kidding right? Guitar EASY to learn and get started? I got so frustrated i stopped playing shortly after my guitar purchase. (I did suck but still....) I found it exceptionally hard to do anything at all, and the progress was simlpy too slow. I admire anyone who has a guitar and does not let it sit in the corner of the room gathering dust
