Hola Peeps.

So I want to get an electric guitar and learn how to play it, all just for fun. Now I have seen 2 different types of electric guitars. Just the normal 6 string and then a six string with a lever at the bottom of the guitar.... What is the difference ? I guess the lever helps you to string notes and make funny noices :p

Also which is best, a normal 6 string or a 4 string Bass guitar ?

The lever is just for effects. Jimi Hendrix type 'trills' etc.

I'd go 6 string before bass. You can at least strum some songs and get the hang of it. With the bass you'd just be plonking single notes out.

Perfect, thanx mate :)

So if I want to go buy an all rounder guitar, the 6 string would be perfect :) And only get the lever if I want to be Mr. Jack Spark :D

Much appreciated.

What's your budget? The lever thing (why the HELL can't I remember what it's called? There is one lying here in front of me on my desk.) shouldn't effect the price. The name printed on the end of the neck is usually what determines the price.

And yes. Go for 6 string.

I'm only starting out so I don't want to buy a R 10k guitar.

About R 2k would be efficient I think for a nice guitar to start with ?

Check gumtree for Guitar + Amp deals. R2k will get you something cool I'm sure.

I'm with sn3rd! Get the Fender Squier!

I've accumulated 6 guitars over the years, and apart for my Gibson Les Paul, my battered old Squier is still one of my favs :-)

While you're at it, get the guys at the guitar shop to fit light strings and have them lower the action of the strings a bit too (but not too much!). It will make a huge difference while you're still staring out, especially until you've built up some strength and confidence in your fretting hand!

Good luck!

Pitbull i'd suggest going through a reputable music shop, at least you get support there and they can teach you to set it up etc, re-string it and they usually give you good deals on future purchases. I find that since I went through a store, I now often get strings for nothing, I get oils, cases, music books etc for nothing or for very little ... well worth the extra few hundred you'd probably be paying.

Kitten must be hot. Muso's giving stuff away free is not normal.

I got a R2500 discount on my yamaha, plenty free hard cases, music, brilliant price on amps etc ... its all about the walk waaib :P hehe

Pitbull are you going to go for lessons, or just teach yourself?

Well I personally think its awesome to sit and play something, so good luck! :) I hope you come right with a guitar. An electric might not be the best way to first start, but if thats what you want then its what ya want :P

haha sure, if you say so. How long have you played? oh? you haven't? oh .. yeah you know what youre talking about :D

Well, go and check at marshall musci stores, they have great deals on guitars (get yourself the jackson flying V!!!!! And its not that expensive, last time I looked it was between R2000 and R3000).

Ibanez is a good guitar that you can depend on, but can be a bit pricey. I was lucky in 95, I picked up a FGM signature ibanez model at TOMS (when they were still in braamfontein), incl. pedal and bag it was R2500 (they guitar was in the bargain bin because it had a small nick close to the neck). That same guitar is now worth between $10000 and $15000 as it was a limited release.

Goes without saying, no one is allowed to touch my baby, or look at it directly
