Guitar question

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ... I must admit, I don't fancy anyone playing my guitars either .. unless its the nylon haha poor little thing :)

Yeah, its like someone saying :"Hey, give me your wife there so I can show you how to really kiss".....only worse

Ur kidding right? Guitar EASY to learn and get started? I got so frustrated i stopped playing shortly after my guitar purchase. (I did suck but still....) I found it exceptionally hard to do anything at all, and the progress was simlpy too slow. I admire anyone who has a guitar and does not let it sit in the corner of the room gathering dust

Guitar is by no means an easy instrument to play, but of the most popular choices its the one instrument that you have the potential of hearing something decent in the early days ... I too lost interest after a few weeks, but I pushed through and suddenly things fell into place. It's very easy for someone to say "go learn some chords and put them together" but thinking back to when I tried to learn, just figuring out the finger positions on basic chords put me off. It truly is easier to just get a professional to show you the basics. After all, rather get into the habit of doing it right, than later try break the bad habits.

i honestly still think its very hard (perhaps is lies with talent?), i moved to drums and had instant satisfaction. Definitely one of the easiest instruments to start!

Agreed on the lessons things, maybe if i had gone it would have been different, i also find with being taught its kinda inspiration to go home and practice, saying "i wanna play like that"...

I'd also recommend going for acoustic steel string before moving to electric. It's just that much more versatile. An unplugged Les Paul aint going to rock no beach bonfire! :D Also there's the strength building aspect to consider. You wont realise it now but you need to and do build up a lot of strength in your fret hand. This conditioning also means that the pads on the fingers of your fret hand become calloused. If you start on electric, it's sort of like taking a shortcut in that respect.

Anyway, just my opinion. If you're dead-set on electric from the start, there's no problem with that.

I do ask if they know how to play first. ;) .

I once walked into Ronnie's All Bang and Strummit near Cresta. I had heard that he had found an extremely rare Gisbon arch-top jazz guitar. Made in the 50's. Only 7 ever made. 5 where sunburst. 2 where blond. One of the blonds was traced to being destroyed in a house fire. The other blond ... it was there.... Ronnie had found it.

The Gibson museum offered him more than US$50k (9 or 10 years ago) for it and wanted to fly him over there to present it to them etc. I know he took the money but said he'd rather just courier it over there.

So I went into the shop and asked about. He kicked a case at the bottom of a pile of six other cases handed me a lead (to an amp) and said, 'It's in there, have ago, she was made to be played'.

I've seen and played much more expensive guitars since (never owned any though) but none with so much history.

True story.

+1 for the nylon string starter geet.
With a classical you learn how to place your fingers and how much force is needed in order to fret a chord or play a note.
The neck is also considerably thicker and wider which trains your mind to look for the most economical way to move through the progressions that your fretting hand must perform in order to play a given piece - all of this is pretty much handed to you on an electric and you will never gain the strength and technique that you will learn starting out on a nylon string.
you can pick up cheapies for under R500 - also a good way to figure out if you are that into it ;)

K looks like I'll start there then.

I have been listening to all these responses taking them all to heart ;) What go me turned was the fact that I might pick up playing guitar and just leave it after a month of so. If that is the case I'd rather waste R 500 than R 2000 :D

Thanx Guys/Girl

Heh, i think a better way of putting it is, Guitar is easy to learn, hard to master ;). But as was mentioned, of all the instruments i tried, i was playing songs people could recognize the fastest on my guitar (playing the songs perfectly is another story ;) ).

In fact, what i did was, i learned a few basic presses [A,E,C,D etc], then went and found some chords on the web of songs using just those chords [and there are alot]...usually there's a random barcord or a press i don't know yet...then i add THOSE chords to my priority list of "to practice asap" so i can play the song properly ...quite fun when you start hearing the song coming together. That kept me going, so it's not like you need to learn ALL of the presses to play your first song ;).

The main part for me is simply actually getting the pressure and finger positioning sorted out [i.e. like making all of your lazy arse fingers press the strings down properly] and getting use to where everything is on the guitar...then alot just falls into place.

Best way to learn guitar:

1) Practice (it makes you practice).
2) Learn new songs constantly (It teaches you new chords).
3) Play with other people (everyone was a newbie once and everyone is keen to help others learn).
