Gun ownership

Any forumites have or are in the process of getting one? I went to an indoor range this past weekend with my bother and one of his mates which is quite proficient and owns several pistols, and I quite enjoyed the experience, especially since I got to fire several different pistols as opposed to just looking one over.

PS: I am not looking for responses on why guns are bad. Personally I have been neither here or there about gun ownership for self deference, leaning more towards seeing it in the same light as insurance.

I have no desire to own one, but I'd dig to shoot one at a range - Sounds like fun.

It is! I was rather apprehensive about the whole idea, not being sure how to handle the thing, etc. But after the 1st shot I had a Homer Simpson moment (aroused & confused) and really got into it. My hands, arms and shoulders are sore, though!

If we had gun laws like the US where in some states you can just walk into a shop and buy a gun without a licence then I would be keen to own one. But the current licencing system in South Africa is extremely flawed. The police cannot be trusted in this country and I don't feel comfortable handing over my personal information to them and go through all the other crazy stuff you have to go through to get a gun licence in South Africa.

I know several people who have 2 gun safes in their houses, 1 to show the police when they come to do their safe inspection, and the other one is the actual safe they use to store their guns. They simply do not trust the police to know where their guns are stored. Who knows what the police are doing with that information.

They already have your personal information ;)

The process is much better than it was in 2009. The Central Firearms Registry processes applications much faster. For example a recent shotgun application of mine took 8 1/2 weeks (without competency). Another handgun application (Section21 permit) took two weeks.

To be honest if you think it is too much trouble to write a competency test and license a firearm you probably should not own one.

Do you get ranges that allow people to fire off a couple shots just for fun? Id like to shoot but don't want to own either.

Cool I shall make time and go blow off steam. Some of my friends own guns but they freak me out in such uncontrolled enviros, lol.

Sounds like fun marine.

What is the process like for getting a gun license? I've been meaning to get mine but haven't got around to it just yet.

Look it is a ball ache but its worth it.
I really enjoy shooting competitively as well as feeling safe.
It may be a false sense of security but I feel safer and I know I can protect those around me. I am no Rambo, I am a responsible firearm owner.
I am happy to assist you, if you like.
Have you ever used firearms? Do you have any knowledge of the law ?

We used to to shoot in an indoor shooting range as part of our training once a month. The nice part of it was that it was a video wall, so we had certain scenarios to handle.

Must say I miss those monthly practises, although most of them were not indoors.

I have used firearms growing up on a small holding but that was mostly our shotgun killing snakes. We also used to have a magnum that I occasionally shot with. With regards to gun laws, I would say my current knowledge is limited at best. I would have to study it first before going further no doubt.

I've shot since I could ride a bike. My first .22 LR I got when I was 12. When i was at US varsity, believe it or not I would drive around wit a car full of semi automatic weapons - Uzi's, HK91's Ruger Mini 14's 44. mags and winchesters and I'd shoot on Campus at the shooting range where everyone else was plinking .22's then I'd go and blast some tin cans and bottles off campus. Campus Police knew and approved exactly of what I was doing and the State police only stopped me once when I was lugging the hk 91 on a bipod back to my convertable because they were a bit nervous never having seen one before in public and not quite sure of the law... but they were cool and in those days it was responsible gun ownership not the whackjobs on the prowl.
I suppose today I'd be arrested and branded a terrist immediately since those weapons predated the banning clause. Fun times.

Oh dear I just googled and I gave away a fortune when I left with my degrees. wiki

The HK91 is rather valuable in the United States firearm market since it was banned from further importation by executive order in 1989. Only 48,817 HK91s were imported into the U.S. prior to 1989. The retail price for an HK91 in the late 1970s was roughly $380 for the standard A2 models and $50 more for the A3 version. Prior to 1979, H&K did limited production runs of HK91s with polygonal rifle barrels. These were only $10 more than their standard counterparts. Today, original HK91s often fetch over $3500.
