Find a place that does competency training. They will provide you with the training material which you need to study.

Theres a test in the book that you need to complete. When you feel comfortable you make an appointment to write the exams (its really easy). After completing the written exams you will shoot an exam.

When you pass everything they will issue you with certificates. Go to the police station with passport photos and ask for the DFO, fill out the application for competency and wait about 2-3 months fir a competency certificate.

Just note that you need to write exams for the firearms control act as well as fir handgun but its really easy.

Edit. Also take cash to the police station for the application. I am not sure how much it is now but its under R200 but they dont accept cards so remember cash.

But please do yourself a favour and either visit tac shac, flora guns ir dave sheer, very very very helpfull people and they will guide you right through the entire process.

Feel free to ask any other questions.

Guns should not be regulated. There should be a 100% free market. government regulation kills jobs.

Step 2 - While your application for competency are being reviewed find a FA like I explained earlier. Remember to choose one that fits you, spares and accessories are readily available, holsters are available and one that feels good while shooting it.

You can go to the above mentioned places and ask to fire some FA's. Once you have found one pay for it. You can then go to the shop and shoot it as often as you want(if they have a range).

Once you received your competency apply for a lisence. Get your motivation airtight otherwise they will refuse it. When applying take cash again, enjoy the fingerprinting again and wait 3 months again.

In your motivation you should include pictures of current security measures taken by you and why you selected the particular FA etc

Where is tac shac?
Looks like they might be in a residential area, but from the photos it seem to be a outdoor range.

Sounds like fun marine.

What is the process like for getting a gun license? I've been meaning to get mine but haven't got around to it just yet.

You need to get competency - this involves a written test (open book IIRC) and a shooting test.
Once you have competency, you apply for a license. This involves a motivation (essay), lots of paperwork, bringing people in as character references, some more paperwork.

Then you wait a bit and voila

Thanks..! Now I'm wondering which is best....Probably each has his own not that we would be using them other than practice and typically self defence.

Depends what you like/need. If you want it for EDC (everyday carry) you'll probably want a lighter, more compact gun. If you want it for competition, you may want a longer firearm (often more accurate sights). You need to decide on calibre (9mm, .40, .45 etc). You also need to decide on 'features', hand fit and preference in terms of aesthetics.

where's a good range in Jhb?
what are the costs involved to fire say 3 different types of guns?

Dave Sheer Guns near Corlett Drive in Bramley and Guthries in Midrand are both decent shops with indoor ranges attached. Both allow you to hire guns.
Cost of the gun is between R80 and R200 (long guns are more expensive), range fees are R80 I think, and then the expensive part is the rounds (ammo). Even cheaper reloads can be over R3 each. So a box of fifty rounds can easily be R150 (50 rounds can last me less than 10 minutes at a moderate shooting pace; it's only 3 magazines on most firearms).

I went shooting at Flora Guns last night. They have a Indoor range at HillFox. They also have guns for hire. 50 9mm rounds costed R195 if I remember correctly.

I can vouch for Paul who owns TacShac. I have supported his computer network for the last 15 years or so and he's a very decent bloke, if not a somewhat anti-establishment (in the words of Rodriguez).

What rubbish, DSG are the best around
1. They have been ditched as agents by all Swiss & German gun manufacturers. These countries then didn't want to sell guns to any shops, not just Sheer.
2. They still tell people they are official agents.
3. Their directors are all on bail for serious offences.
4. They were accused of selling second hand guns.
5. They were accused of selling the same guns to multiple people.
6. They were accused of bribing the Central Firearms Registry to get dodgy people licensed.
7. They were accused of forwarding on firearms to countries that normally have trouble getting them, like Sudan/Iran etc.

You really want to buy an expensive weapon from guys like these?

Points 3-7, which are all part of a pending trial, are irrelevant to me.
Points 1 and 2 are just your say so.

As to your question, if they have a particular firearm in stock, and it's the right price, then yes I would most definitely buy an expensive weapon from them.

What exactly is your agenda here?

Clearly you will buy from anybody. I have a nice sturdy bridge nearby - interested? Buyer collects. :D

Why not ring them on Monday and test 1 & 2.

Then ring the official agents and ask them if they will support your shiny new R15000 toy when Sheer is closed and said directors are sharing a cell with Bubba.

If you have an agenda against DSG, then raise it. Don't spout this self righteous BS about who to purchase from on moral grounds

I bought at least 5 guns there.
Innocent until proven guilty.
Do you work for another dealer or agent?
Everyone knows that a certain importer was behind that case because he lost the agency to a popular firearm. Do you perhaps work for them?
Dsg are a great bunch of guys and always have the best prices

We actually have local manufacturers that have been blacklisted from exporting to USA because they sold weapons to Iraq and Afghanistan (of which some were found in the hands of Al Queda). So DSG aren't the only vrot ones out there.

They admitted some of the accusations, then their slick lawyer got them bail and the police are consdering cancelling their dealers' license.

This is a warning to anyone considering a purchase. If you want to take the risk with a lot of money, then go for it.

Never heard the story you walk about. Sounds like an excuse. Tell us more (if there is more).

Unfortunately it just takes one dealer to spoil everything. This is the reason most Moms & Pops can't buy parts easily for what they've bought.

Absolute rubbish.
Their license has been extended for a further 5 years.
Another importer paid for certain investigations to go ahead against them.
Because he lost his sole agency
;)
I know this because I know the guys at DSG.
As I said i have dealt with them for years. Never 1 issue
