If we had gun laws like the US where in some states you can just walk into a shop and buy a gun without a licence then I would be keen to own one. But the current licencing system in South Africa is extremely flawed. The police cannot be trusted in this country and I don't feel comfortable handing over my personal information to them and go through all the other crazy stuff you have to go through to get a gun licence in South Africa.

I know several people who have 2 gun safes in their houses, 1 to show the police when they come to do their safe inspection, and the other one is the actual safe they use to store their guns. They simply do not trust the police to know where their guns are stored. Who knows what the police are doing with that information.

Any fool who trusts government is certifiable insane. There are 200 MILLION reasons not to.

Perhaps that is becasue citizens have forgotten they have rights. Not only that they now abdicate any duty they have of protecting their rights. It is though the constitution or government gives us rights. Not only here but even in the USA which in the future will be disarmed becasue citizens could not be bothered to object. They have no value for their safety, freedom, liberty and that of their loved ones and family. Government must look after them.

First a firearm is an inanimate object. The most unique object on this earth is deserves special study to find out what its unique power is that no other inanimate object has. They are neither good nor bad. They cannot do anything by themselves and do not control people or turn them into monsters but a large proportion of citizens believes they can.

Without doubt in a defensive situation there is nothing better. All we have to do is figure if we deserve to be made helpless by government and why we allow it.

Can government prove one firearm law anywhere in the world has reduced crime, the supply of guns to criminals or increased public safety? Nobody can.

So what then is the purpose of gun control and why are we not objecting to it?

I handed my FA application in last week for a Sig Sauer SP2022. Can not wait to take it to the range!

South Africa doesn't have a right to bare arms like the US does, and it prefixed by the mention of a well regulated militia, which in itself suggests government involvement (not counting supreme court decision that in this case doesn't matter).

Maybe some time we must make a day and you guys come shoot. You buy the ammo and you can shoot m4,shotgun,rifle and handguns

Sounds like a plan.
Haven't been on a gun range in quite a while.
Used to shoot almost every weekend when I was still in CPT.

Sounds like fun marine.

What is the process like for getting a gun license? I've been meaning to get mine but haven't got around to it just yet.

Reviving this thread as I think it's time to start this whole process. Just a quick question. My SO is under the impression that only one person in a household is allowed to have a gun licence...any truth to this...? I would like for her and myself to both do this together.

No. Each can have a licence for their own firearm. You are also allowed to buy 1 firearm and both obtain a licence for the same FA. If each has its own FA, you are NOT allowed access to each others FA.

I have a few weapons and i used to be an instructor in fire arms .
Most important part of owning a fire arm is safety , imagine killing some one you love by accident .
That was my most important part of teaching a person to use a fire arm is safety.

Thanks..! Now I'm wondering which is best....Probably each has his own not that we would be using them other than practice and typically self defence.

It's a terrifying concept and happens way too often.

Get one for each. Are you going to carry it 24/7? If not and the FA's will be safe queens you might as well leave it.

Also, please buy the correct FA. Go to a shop and feel the firearms, fondle them and make sure it fits YOUR hand perfectly. Where are you based?

Thats why the only reason you will draw a FA is to shoot but before you squeeze that trigger you should "know" what or who your target is and what is behind your target.

Never draw a FA to scare someone or act like some type of gangster.

24/7 carry would be almost impossible considering my profession as well as the SO. However carrying when we are out is a different story completely and forms part of our reason for even considering it. (we do hiking etc in remote areas).

We are based in Jhb and as you have stated will consider the FAs once we have handled and fired them. There's not a massive rush to get it done fast as I would rather do it properly.

Why would you not be able to carry 24/7? Thats like leaving your spare wheel at home and only taking it with you sometimes. Theres no specific time you would need a FA.

Search on facebook for a place called TacShac, get their address and pay them a visit. Just a warning, if you even slightly like FA's ONLY take R1000 with you otherwise you will have a problem. I am not sure regarding costs but give them a call before you go. Very nice bunch of people.

I completely understand what you are saying but my work prohibits carrying any firearms on our premises. Same goes for my wife.

Its easier to ask for forgiveness than it is for permission. If you conceal your FA well enough not one person will notice unless you have to pass through metal detectors or thorough searches.

I have been carrying for a year now and only one person in the office knows that I do and thats because I told him should something happen or happen to me.

But that is for you to decide but my opinion will always be to carry 24/7 as you never know when you might need it

If you are on good terms with your manager ask him in a nice way his views regarding FA's. If he likes them he would probably not do anything to you if he finda out you are carrying. But as I said, if there are security check points you dont have any other option.

But also take a drive to tacshac and speak to the guys there. Its a whole new world that you get to know.

And shooting is fun.

Most important thing is safety and keep that finger OFF the trigger unless you are about to pull it.
