GW vs. WoW

Skill:
Niether of these games need skill u just spam ur combo and viola u own every single mob/player u find i mean serously just go to gwwiki get a nice template for yourself and just spam the buttons the way they tell you too and there ur leet

Lol, you have not then done a UW run with a full guild team or tried Slavers?

I played WoW it was not for me because to much is made of the "reaching your cap" (it would have been nice if GW did not have a cap but you stopped gaining anything from leveling after lvl 20:D) also I am a casual player but I am a senior player amongst a couple of alliances.

At the end of the day I picked GW because it takes more skill IMO and because I do not have to grind to a high level before I can become tryuly pulled into the game.

the most important aspect of me and i have this debate with this guy at work is you cannot jump in GW it just pisses me off to much:P i bought it tried to jump without typing /jump and then deleted it:P

Ok what does jumping really make better in WoW?

Luckly jumping really doesnt bother me... and deleting/judging a game after, what, 5 mins is a bit foolish IMO.

Guys, hear me out.

I played Runescape many years ago :o

I liked the interactive way it was played. I joined MyADSL weighed up GW vs WoW and went for GW's. It was great fun..... for the 3 weeks I played it. a Friend of mine played WoW and said I must give him my GW discs he want's to try it out and I can make a char on his WoW account and see if I like that.

This was to put an end to the debate which one is better.

I ended up playing WoW and he didn't even play past level 5 on GW's before he phoned me and asked me to log out of WoW he want's to play :D

I had to drive around and find a Classic version of WoW for sale to start playing that same day.

WoW is by far the best, but you need to play both to realise why ;)

GW's has it's things and moments but WoW has that and so much more.

To me the fact that there is constant player base all over the world unlike GW's is what made me decide to go with WoW. And it's been 2 years already :D

I have played WoW, I played it for about 44-55 hours (5 days x +- 8-11 hours :D).

It was not horrible it was just to much grinding from the word go. "go get x of y and bring it back here" But it had its + points, the instances in GW tend to grind me a little as appose to the nice open / free world of WoW.

I also prefered how GW rewards you for skill not time :)

Each to his own I just know that GW 2 Will see me as soon as it is out :D

That is what makes both these games so successfull.

They cater for 2 different type of players. One needs to play both to realise which one suites u best ;) That is the point I'm trying to make. I love the social aspect of WoW, which is greatly lacking in GW's :p

Johnny , I felt exactly the same ... only until I started playing WoW.

Wait until you experience your first ganking encounter with the horde. Unlike GW where you only interact with other people in outposts - WoW has people ANYWHERE. so while you're in the forest being klapped by a beast - a random person will come by and assist - then run off again (Alliance okes are nice that way :p)

This also means that the enemy can attack you at any point in the game - anywhere.

It's really awesome coming across one - then killing him/her - who then call their big buddies to moer you...and you call yours in return. More often than not a single feud or simple fight between two low level characters turns into one huge mob fest.

Here are some points that sold the game to me:

Loading of the game:

There are only really load screens if you do instances (special missions unlike normal quests) and when travelling between continents.

Otherwise you can run through an entire continent without EVER having to wait for that annoying loading/updating/downloading screen GW seems to have every 100m.

Travelling:
Your movement is also much better. You can buy a mount (tiger/horse/whatnot) at lvl40 and an epic mount (orsm tiger/kief horse/ elephant etc.) at lvl 60. Much later on u can get an epic flying mount @ lvl 70. And yes - you can pretty much fly anywhere.

You can also travel by boat to lots of places or fly on a griffin. It's THE most amazing scenery when you fly between places - and since there are no cutscenes you see EVERYTHING all the time. You even see other players riding griffins on the way back past you :)

Skills:
Unlike GW where each class is human, with WoW you can select just about any race and assign any class to him/her. certain races offer better points to specific classes etc.

Professions:
Aside from being a hunter/warrior/whatnot, you can select 2 main professions. These are completely separate from your fighting skills, for instance:
Mining/skinning/herbalism as gathering skills or tailoring/enchanting/blacksmithing/engineering/leatherworking as a crafting skill. So you can pretty much gather ur own material and make your own armor/weapons/whatnot - or sell it on...

The Auction House:

I spend about 1/4th of my game time here... buying and selling goods at various rates instead of dealing with random outpost lurkers like in GW who trade privately. You can compare prices and either bid on an item or select buyout at a higher rate to secure the item. It works rather well if you need something specific which the vendors don't sell. You can also pick up crazy bargains - which saves you ALOT of time finding it in the field.

Teamwork:

People pay alot for this game and try not to spoil it for each other - i've found (well on the EU servers anyway) ... when you're killing bunnies in a quest and someone else rocks up - they generally leave if u ask nicely instead of competing the whole time. It's also nice to give help and receive it when something is attacking a fellow player - whether you know them or not. It's always nice to have a random priest run past and cast a protective spell on you and then run off.

MMORPG:
In GW you only REALLY deal with other people in outposts or arena. Other than that the game is basically mutliplayer co-op where you and 3 buddies take on the computer's NPC monsters etc. In WoW the NPC's are still there, but there could be a different player friend or foe hiding around each corner.

Payment:

Sure its expensive - but only if you don't play it enough to warrant the subscription fee. If you're not heavy into gaming , dont bother. you'll just end up hating it for taking your money. If you are prepared to spend sufficient time on it, you will not get better value entertainment for that amount of time and money in a month. (unless you know some really cheap scurvey-free hookers) It automatically deducts from your C/C - and if you don't have one or trust the NET with it - you can always buy gaming cards from any pc gaming shop. Scratch the card and enter the key. Hey presto - you're sorted. You can buy more than 1 card instead of going back to the shop every month and just use it when you need to.

Modding:
You can add lots of little side programs which makes the game easier. They're not cheats since theyre Blizzard approved, but they do make things alot easier. i.e.: auctioneer that helps you with pricing (and remembers latest prices etc.), or chartographer which is a better mapping system, or even mods changing your interface so your button layouts are more user friendly. Literally every person's interface looks different.

You can get a free 10 day trial account just to check out the game. Just get the game files from someone and you're set to go. But be warned - you'll be hooked!

FalconZA ... to be fair - if you read above , they're actually vastly different games.

I wont EVER turn anyone down for wanting to play GW. Its an AWESOME package for a once off payment and I enjoyed it immensely.

Surprisingly with all the stuff mentioned about why WoW > GW - the gfx detail of landscapes and characters on GW still outshine WoW by faaaar. Much smoother/detailed/less animated.

*bump*

Just a quick recap from my posts many moons ago.

Was thinking of getting GW today but not sure if it is worth the R400, (that is for the complete package)....I am not interested in WOW as I seriously am not paying a monthly fee for something I wont play day in and day out....So what do you guys think? Is it worth the green?

Yes, it's a damn good deal for the three settings plus the add-on.

I have to admit,

Before my WoW addiction, I enjoyed GW's endlessly. But MMO's are not for everyone though. If you like Online gaming you will get it in GW's. If you want more than wat GW's offer then try WoW on a later stage. But it's worth the R 400 either way :)

Cool thanks...How much bandwidth does the game chew and how big are the patches you need to dl before you can play?

R400 is definitely worth it. Excellent deal.

I've found the game uses around 5-8Mb per hour when doing 8 vs 8 PvP, which is quite excellent in my opinion. With regards to the updates - the complete collection should have most of them included. You're looking at a few megabytes maybe. Guild Wars updates are tiny...a few hundred kilobytes. It's awesome :)
