Hi there

One of my friends (really!) is thinking of buying a GWM H5 SUV. I cannot find much information about this car, and it is also not listed on the JD Power survey.

Do you know anything about the build quality and reliability of GWM?

copied from somewhere.
Much better than the Hover. You can buy it and sleep well, if your garage is locked.

I dont know too much except its a lot of vehicle for the money and although cheap and hard plastics are the order of the day, you are hardly paying BMW money. I think its excellent value for money and as for reliability, the H5 is called Haval in other markets and 1 of them finished 7th overall in the latest Dakar rally. I think the chinese are making massive strides and if you not expecting too much, it could be a pleasant surprise.

2.4 engine is a mitsubishi unit and although perhaps underpowered and a little thirsty, should prove very reliable.

As mentioned GWM are making huge strides but I wouldn't yet. Hyundai/Kia is where the value is at the moment.

A friend of mine has recently purchased a GWM Steed 5, very interested to see how it looks after a few years.

I'm thinking the next generation of GWM vehicles will be much closer to the mark, and the generation after that will put them on a level footing with the rest of the world...

Thanks for the feedback. GWM is certainly an unknown at this stage.

From my other thread:

Yup, they're chinese...

The pricing on their vehicles is pretty good.. but you get 5 - 10 year old tech on the vehicles....

I think they're a generation away from being decent to buy personally... although i am looking at their double cab currently, because its basically the old ISUZU.

GWM = General Waste of Money
Their Horrid Florid seems to be quite popular.

And you were worried about a rental? :wtf:

Cheap and Chinese are both to be avoided. It may look like an 8 year old Isuzu but it has a mixture of all sorts of old Japanese makes below the skin. I was chatting to a panel beater who said that repairing one after an accident involved getting parts from Nissan Isuzu and Toyota.

I personally wouldn't go that route if you paid me.

On the GWMs... I was forced to spend a week and a bit with a Hover 2 years or so ago. If I recall it'd done about 17,000km.

In short, it smelt like Bostik inside, it rattled, the 2.something petrol motor sounded like it wanted to burst through the bonnet above 3,500 rpm, there were sharp edges to all the plastics inside the cabin (I'm sporting a Hover-induced scar on my index finger) and it was thirsty & wheezy. I'd rather walk. Barefoot. Through broken glass.
