Hello.

So, I'd very much like to get in shape, but don't really know where to start, having not ever tried this before.

Looking for gym suggestions in the Southern Suburbs, as well as any practical advice on how to shed my slothfulness.

Thanks in advance.

Get a gym partner. Make sure said gym partner is motivated :p And when said gym partner decides not to gym because of any invalid reason (lazy or don't feel like it) then you need to motivate said partner.

Going alone is such a downer.

Maybe start with Pilates classes for a few months and walking.

Motivation is good to get you started. Discipline will keep you going. Is there a reason why you are going straight to a gym? Have you thought about working out at home for a few months, maybe a few walks/runs a week. There a lot of bodyweight exercises you can do.

go to bodybuilding.com, pick a training program and stick with it, try Kris Gethin, I'm doing this, its hard, but stick to weights that you can handle, form is better than weight:

Check your diet and try do the following:
Mix your proteins, Chicken, Tuna, Fish, etc
Eat loads of dark green veg
Drink Green tea
Eat at least 6 times per day, chicken breast and salad etc
Eat good clean carbs, brown rice and sweet potatoes etc
Take your measurements and track your progress, if you dont track you wont know if you doing anything at all

Rem, its takes time, if you going to get on the sale daily and or look in the mirror daily, your chances of quitting is good, results take time, so stay focused, dont make excuses and keep hitting the gym each day, give yourself a good solid 6 months of heart and soul and you will see the results

Best of luck

How about jogging at Newlands forest before spending money on gym?

I have indeed, for years now. That's part of the issue I think - If I am paying money for gym I hope I may be inclined to actually get off my arse.

This is no doubt true, but I'm still relatively fresh in town and don't have anyone to gym with.

I detest jogging with an incendiary passion.
I feel the same about road jogging. Running through the forest is really nice tho - and you can use your surroundings to do some decent exercises. You considered joining a boxing gym then? Maybe go check out The Armoury in Woodstock. The physical training classes are great.

There will be aspects of any exercise routine that are harder than others, for some people more than others.

Overcoming these obstacles is one of the most important skills that a good exercise routine can teach you. Gains will motivate you but the real struggles, as is so often the case, take place in your mind.
