Halaal restaurants

Did anyone try the Norwood Pizza Hut yet?

Any good?

tried the pizza hut. Not bad but still prefer Romans.

The Mivami in norwood is awesome. THe pitas are delicious and full of flavour

Any one care to share Halaal places in CPT?

I've been to:

Franchises (Spur, Jimmy's, Ocean Basket,Simply Asia)
Jewel of India (Wale Street)
Nuri (Sushi, no alcohol)
Dekapo (Seapoint)
The Atlantic Express (Seapoint)
Taj Mahal (Hout Bay)
Nino's (Rondebosch)

LaRocca Canal Walk

I had the Pizza hut in Boksburg. Deep dish is quite oily and not worth the hefty price tag. Will try thin base next time.

Try the Turkish place in Mayfair (on Church Street) - way better then the Fordsburg ones. Decent sit down area. Apparently they also took over the restaurant in Midrand (at the turkish mosque). Love their "Iskender" dish.

Here's my review of this place:

I don't normally discuss whether food was good or bad, but apart from the generous portions I was given, the food here was bland at best.

I don't know how imranpaji got the luxury of chips with his food, but I got nothing of that sort and basically got a salad + meat + roti + rice.

Forgetting the bland food with what looks to be roasted chillis (would anyone even eat that without crying?), the customer service was extraordinarily terrible.

Those waitresses just stand around and watch you while you eat. Nothing is more fun than a line of 6-8 staff just looking as you try to stuff your face with dry meat.

If you haven't tried this Istanbul place before, go once and you'll probably not want to go again (unless you find one that can swap out their cold rice, tasteless salad, with some chips or a better side-dish).

You may also get a entirely disgusted (depending on personal hygiene) when you see them making those rotis without gloves or anything (I unfortunately only saw after exiting).

I still quiver at the thought of eating that red chilli stuff they served as a side-plate dish

My experience with strictly Halal eating places in Cpt is that the food sucks.
Its more about quantity than quality.

First a bit of clarification
Imraans pic (and my recommendation)was from Istanbul in Rivonia - although the same owner / franchise i cant vouch for the fordsburg one but Rivonia is excellent
Naeem is referring to the one in Mayfair thats Burhaans (i think) they different people

Also Turkish food is normally not the spiciest stuff (compared to us indians) and the roasted veggie / chili is kind of their thing - though i find Istanbul has a bit of spice to it compared to other Turkish places

I beg to differ, in terms of the food, it was pretty decent. Bland is to be expected, it's Turkish after all.

Don't go for a sit down though, their service is mediocre at best. Rather take away.

Try the Iskendar dish.

Basically the shredded meat (on that donner grille), on a bed of their bread, drizzled with an olive oil/tomatoe type sauce. VERY tasty. Yes not spicy, but delicious. Even more when you mix it with a dollop of their yoghurt.

I had the set menu at Pigalle recently.

Killer price tag, but oddly worth it. Super smooth cumin and butternut soup and the best beef fillet I have eaten in years.
