True, it is way cool , tho i'm still torn between Gnome and KDE as far as desktop environments go. But as an OS it's really stable, fast and customisable - 3 areas where it kicks Vista to pieces, and all are critical components of a truly GOOD os. None are perfect.

...and therin lies the real issue. Commercial companies are going to want to charge $ for their stuff, which doesn't go well with the open source philosopy.

What you say is tru tho. And once the driver thing and the commercial / OS support is sorted, then bye bye microsoft

Having tried Windows 7 I gotta say I'm more excited about a new version of OSx. Windows 7 appears to be pretty much Vista with a little more speed.

Dude, I wouldn't bother getting sucked into a debate with <moLe>. Though he claims to be of superior intelligence to anyone else in the world except Linus Torvalds, that alone should tell you he is anything but. He can get really nasty if you haven't sworn an oath to defend Linux to the death.

The general spirit here is one of mutual interest in ITC, as well as differences, but also a respect for fellow members. That's the way it should be.

So don't be put off this forum, you'll find most people here are really cool and very knowledgeable about the ITC situation in SA.

Linux is growing faster than people think. Its a difficult one to track when one copy downloaded can be used many times to install. My client is rolling Linux out to it's branches, that's thousands of desktops and they even wrote their own remote desktop support software. Very effective. In fact, they can take a brand new machine with no OS loaded, plug it into the network, and it loads the OS. Try that on Windows.

I understand what you mean. In theory you can set up a basic install image to accommodate a few bits and pieces of extra hardware - then create a disk image of it using Clonezilla - and clone that image over to more than one PC simultaneously - without the need to go through activation.

With Windows the same can be done, but then you need to activate each and every windows PC's licence... major schlepp and hassle, especially if you replace a failed HDD and restored the image - and up pops the activation screen...

Well vista in my eyes will always remain the dumbest Idea windows ever thought up, and yes Linux or open source operating systems in general in my eyes remain better. Just for the fact that one can manipulate it to ones needs seeing that u have access to the kernel. With windows things are to closed up for my liking, its dull its dead and even though I still duel boot xp I never needed to really use it. And guess I get carried away, and me calling other people idiots should never be taken up serious, I do it all the time and those that know me know that i use it more to insist that u are stubborn . Also never inclined that I am of greater intelligence, all I remember saying is that Linux user in general tend to be more familiar with the workings of their OS .

but in general I apologize for maybe at times being to temperamental and to "fan boyish"...but U'll never convince me that Windows is a better OS. And please understand, I dont think U guys are idiots..just haven't seen the light yet
