Guys, you mustn't forget DMDE. In most cases it can find your files where other tools require full surface scan. I can be critical if you want only few files but drive is unstable and deteriorating quick.

Ta, I see they also have a linux version which is cool. I don't like windows touching fubarred drives as it does it's own thing when booting up.

Yip, DOS, Linux and Windows (console and GUI). I use DOS version in all cases I can boot to DOS due to the best error handling.

It doesn't require installation, so it can be used in Windows PE. However I agree to touching things by Windows, even booting from Hirens boot CD it updates log file (on NTFS partition) which not good for data recovery purpose.
