Ah, that reminds me as well... Guys ... if your CD and DVD backups are more than five years old, it is time to throw those away or re-create them. Do not rely on the "ten year shelf life for CDs and DVD's that manufacturers tout"!!!
This is true,esp. if you have "heavy data" on your CDs and DVDs (highly compacted data). They become much harder to read over time!

I use Acronis True Image Home 10 to back up my entire C:\ drive. That way I don't need to update my Windows installation again when something goes wrong

spinrite does have a no quibbles,money back if not happy guarantee. But if someone uses that option they are not really serious about the value of data recovery imo.

I also do not bother backing up the entire system. Waste of time to me. I would rather start with a fresh installation anyway.
All I back up is the following...
1) My Documents Folder
2) Downloads Folder
3) My Outlook PST Folder (or where ever your e-mail is stored)
4) My Firefox Profile
5) My Templates and Custom Dictionaries from MS-Word.
I use Allway Synch to back up to DVD or a removable Hard Drive.
I also back-up some of my essential info to my Gmail.

I don't have a lot of cap so I update my Windows once, back up and never have to download those updates again
But my Windows installation has been pretty much set up the way I want it, so it saves me a lot of time each time something goes horribly wrong.

Good Point, I used to use AutoPatcher to save me from that... and with SP3 out now for XP there are not too many updates out.
But your point is a good one. Saves a lot of time on updating.

Sure you get Firefox all set up just the way you like it, with all the add-ons, all your bookmarks, your passwords everything, then you back up your entire profile so you can copy it exactly as is to another computer or restore it if you have to in the same version.
Your profile is stored here...
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles...
Your folder name will look something like this..."k13xy5k6.default"
Everything inside there is all you need to back up....
That folder name is different on every computer. if you restore to another computer you will have to rename the folder to whatever that one is using.

No such problems with Taiyo Yuden media.
Good quality DVD media is reputed to have a 100 year shelf life under reasonable conditions.

Have you ever recovered to a different computer using your Acronis. I used "image for windows" and found it virtually impossible to recover to a new computer due to drivers etc.
The major problem turned out to be the Sata drive on my new computer.
After recovering the image all I got was a blue screen of death, so I am quite interested in hearing about your experience.
And if it works well, $50 is a small price to pay for complete security in my case. I was fortunate that I was just moving my system fom one machine to another, otherwise I would have had to install all my applications again, or as Microsoft suggested on their site, a similar computer to the original one.

You are welcome, just remember you can only restore into the same version or you will get an error message.
