A noisy hard drive can be a warning of imminent failure... Is this a new hard drive?

Thanks all, I will try chkdsk.

@ Beanie - The drive is 4 days old. :(

Ouch... Well, as xrapidx said, some drives are just noisy. However, if it creates painful scratching sounds it's not a good sign...

But do a chkdsk just to be safe :)

some times drives just break... and there's nothing you can do about it...

In fact most drive failures happen within the first 6 months... which is why you should always keep the warranty close :)

lol... it's most likely just searching for files and other crap... those big drives are noisy but you don't notice them when in your pc case

Congrats on the Resident Techie, WKJ Beanie!

What is chkdsk? Where can I get it. There is nothing on downloads.com. :(

Only noise it make is when I copy and paste. It sounds painful. It's an external drive.

Thanks mate :)

It's the name of the built-in Windows function, previously called Scandisk. The command for it is chkdsk, so I'd rather call it that instead of Scandisk ;)

Right-click on the drive -> Properties -> Tools -> Check Now -> Check both checkboxes and click Start. It will then be scheduled for the next time Windows starts :)
