Are home appliances seen as essential and available for purchase?
If you have a fridge or freezer full of food and the compressor packs up you need to get a fridge ASAP or else you screwed.
Takealot touched on that very same
subject ("Although the current regulations limit us to providing only essential goods at this time, worldwide the picture is quite different and e-commerce companies have largely been allowed to operate as usual while prioritising essential goods. We have engaged with the government to expand the mandate to more than just essential goods as we believe that you will need more than just essential goods as currently defined to run your lives while in lockdown. What happens if your microwave breaks, your modem goes on the fritz, you need chlorine for your pool – there are many such examples.")
In a
later announcement they only mention "we will focus on the sale and delivery of essential goods as authorised and prescribed by the South African Government." Seems all household appliances and electronic items was not included in the end as can be seen for instance by this link to a
fridge.
Edit:
What is interesting is that online sites like wootware / titan ice mentioned above has permission to sell electronic / pc items whereas a
graphics card on takealot for instance can't be sold during this period. Will be interesting to see how long sites like wootware take to deliver.
