You can forget them in devices for years and nothing happens other than they gradually go flat.
Save the planet and your sanity and get batteries with lower internal resistance too boot which makes them more powerful than alkaline.

Got a Energizer recharger yonks ago and replaced all the batteries with Energizer. Never looked back.

For a while it seemed like exploding batteries where a thing of the past, but lately even the big brands have proven dangerous.
“If it’s not an Energizer or a Duracell throw it out and replace it with an Energizer or a Duracell.” My experience suggests I should now exclude Duracell.
