It seems you're right, although that R9 290 comes factory over-clocked so it will beat the Nvidia by a slightly greater margin.

As an aside I have an HD5850 and I'm sick of games being optimized for Nvidia, and cool features like game streaming only available to Nvidia cards. I've always liked AMD for their value proposition but I'm beginning to lose faith.
