I just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row here.

Can I just get the cheapest MTN contract, and use afrihost data on it so that I can get both voice and data on the MTN sim?
 
can afrihost provision any mtn sim on their apn?

Dont think so, afrihost gives you their own sim with their own branding.

Mtn gives you its sim with its branding

Unless you buying 2000 sim cards, don't think its possible.....

Can I use my MTN SIM card to access Afrihost Mobile Data?

From afrihost website:
Yes. MTN clients will be able to sign up for APN access to Afrihost Data from their existing MTN SIM cards. Simply go to our Mobile Data page, choose the data package you want, choose the 'Existing MTN SIM Card' option in the order form and fill in your MTN phone number. We will then enable your new data package to work on your MTN SIM card and will send you all the details of how to setup the Afrihost APN on your phone.

So answer the original question from the OP, Yes
 
It just doesn't work with dual sims where you have 2 cards linked to one contract. They came back to me with an error and I had to get an Afrihost card.

Morning!

That is absolutely correct! You can simply take the cheapest MTN contract and then sign-up for our APN-based Mobile Data packages.

This will allow you to use the Afrihost data, and then use the MTN component for voice-calls and SMS'.

Hey AfriGenie

Why did Afrihost remove any reference to being a MTN CONTRACT client from the website? I recall it being specific to contract and said that prepaid was a no go, now it doesn't say that? If I'm wrong and the website doesn't say that, why does it not say that? It's very misleading...
 
Hello!

Once you have chosen the package to be APN-based during the sign-up process, it will be clarified that your MTN sim card needs to be an active contract sim card.

Although the sim cards that we provide as part of a new Mobile Data package sign-up are technically speaking contract sim cards, all of our packages are completely month to month with no contractual obligation carried over to our Clients.

That's an awful long way to go just to see if you're eligible or not...
 
I tried to get an mtn contract and didn't qualify. I would really love a sim from afrihost that I can top up with voice and SMS on prepaid. Any chance of a sim like that so I can use that as a primary sim for my mobile phone afrigenie?

Not at the moment, but we may be able to help with that in the not to distant future, but I can't go into any details just yet.

Careful of the OOB shark. If you going this route always be updated with MTN current bill for the month..... I would rather go prepaid route, and carry a spare phone with me at times... its better than receiving a R3000. What I don't like about afrihost and axxess mobile offering on prepaid option that calls aren't allowed. Other competitors allow it - surely MTN/Afrihost/Axxess can activate voice..
 
Yeah, there were a couple of guys whose data was billed by MTN and didn't come off their Afrihost, and as usual when there are two service providers, they each blamed the other, and IIRC the customer ended up with the bill. I'd be very reluctant to use an MTN contract SIM with Afrihost data after reading those threads.

Getting actual voice services is a long and complex process involving many bureaucrats and significant tomes of paperwork. We do however have a work around for this, and you are welcome to drop me PM and I can share it with you. :)

The instances of this happening aren't very widespread, and the cases where this happened it was often a cellular's device firmware update that reset the APN - Apple in particular like to reset the APN and Personal Hotspot APN - our APN and data tracking are very accurate.

We've also introduced a feature whereby our system automatically notifies you aren't connected via our APN for a set period of time.

yes I got this. Where I got my wife a new phone but she was not using it and I kept on getting emails to say that Afrihost has not picked up any data connection from the sim in the phone and to check if the APN may have changed or reverted back to MTN
