Have we under estimated Telkom?

Just a note of caution: Please play the ball and not the man. A few guys are likely to have strong views on this matter, but please refrain from personal attacks.

The new SANReN national backbone will interconnect Pretoria, Johannesburg, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban on a 10 Gb/s optic fibre ring network. This network will enable the research community to engage in meaningful online collaboration. It will also be used to link to international bandwidth acquired for research purposes which is being supplied by SEACOM at a greatly reduced cost. The SEACOM deal amounts to 40 times the amount of bandwidth for the price up to now being paid by TENET for its 250 Mbit pipe out of the country.

Let's hear it again..."...supplied by SEACOM at a greatly reduced cost. The SEACOM deal amounts to 40 times the amount of bandwidth for the price up to now being paid by TENET for its 250 Mbit pipe out of the country."

May be some of us were too quick to judge Telkom’s ability to build a world class NGN network?

Nope, telkom is not the one supplying the bandwidth for 40 times cheaper...Telkom, you suck...Try play ball will us...40 times the bandwidth for the same price...not an extra 500megs, thanks to the hard capping on the new Do1, 2 and 3 packages, dressed up as a fantastic "added cap"...

You obviously where to stick your cap by now...

Telkom could have made just as much if not more by playing the game, also enriching the lifes and nation at the same time - sadly they became a fund raising cash cow - play the man don't play the ball, the customer has no rights at all, do one to others before they do, one to you

Unfortunately Telkom is only one with the current infrastructure to distribute that b/w from Seacom.
Pity the other players did not have the F/O networks up and running or pricing right - to distribute the b/w.
Then use M/W for the last mile instead of using Telkom infrastructure.

Not sure how Telkom won the tender - based on price

Unfortunately, the SANReN deal has very little to do with the provision of a world class NGN. In this case, Telkom is simply selling point-to-point bandwidth on its backbone. SANReN itself is building the NGN, treating the Telkom routes purely as pipes. If anything, this demonstrates Telkom's inability to deliver a world class NGN at prices that would attract SANReN, and they've chosen to do it themselves.

In the immortal words of Dubya, we've all misunderestimated Telkom :)

A huge part of the lower prices on Seacom is the higher bandwidth. I'n sure that installing a cable iwth 10 times SAT-3's capacity does not cost 10 times as much almost 10 years later....

now suddenly telkom is the hero?

I reckon it is going to be a good few years before someone like Neotel has enough fibre coverage to really make a difference when it comes to deals like this. It takes a long time to build a nationwide network. I don't know if they will ever have the coverage in the really small towns around South Africa to compete on that level with Telkom. I don't know if it is financially viable to spend billions to link up towns with like 10 000 people in them or less. You need to be a monopoly for a few decades to be able to do that. Oh wait...

DragonLogos I think rpm meant dont attack the writer of the article, attack his argument if you want too.

This is true, some people tend to blow their top and attack people rather than their arguments. Some threads more read like the collective venting of an anger management class than discussions.

Well, as long as Telkom can make extreme profits there will be incentive for other players to build these networks.

I would like to point out that for every finger pointed at Telkom, 80 more fingers must be pointed at government, and the fat handed manner in which critical country resources were sold, and the continued blind eye to the call for local-loop-unbundling.

Telkom's core network is probably very impressive. The reason people "hate" Telkom is that they feel (rightly so) they don't get value for money on ADSL. The fact that Telkom is taking so long to be able to support >4mbs lines/or/higher usage leaves some doubt as to their lack of investment in last mile connectivity. And then they building a "mobile" HSDPA network while their adsl sucks so much doesn't leave one with a warm fuzzy feeling. Telkom should recognise that voice is a declining business and really start to focus on broadband.

While the dedicated Telkom employee, Mr vd Groenedaal comes here to blow the Telkom Trumpet...

... how on earth does this benifit me?

Telkom run a business. Their customer service and perception is not great, but they have built a lot infrastructure. I'm sure there are quite a few clever people behind the scenes and even if you an i don't like it, from a business perspective its made them money.

What people often forget is that when you make a call on a Telkom line how often does it drop? Whereas on the cellular network ho often does it drop? I have more of a problem with the 3 - 5 calls a day i loose on my cellphone, than paying Telkom R100 more than i should for my adsl line.

He is not a Telkom employee.

As the mafia say..."It's just business..."

Telkom have made huge improvements in terms of customer services. Now all they need to do is work on their pricing structures.
