Hi,

I am trying to install XP Pro on my laptop from an external CD Rom (USB). I get to the point where the machine reboots and then gets stuck at 'Press any key to boot from CD...' and just hangs there. I have tried to change the boot order in the BIOS around making the CD Rom the primary boot and then tried to make the HDD the primary but this didn't solve anything. I am not really sure what else to try and would appreciate any help with regard to this very annoying issue.

Regards,
Dat

I'm not sure if this will really help, but in my experience this normally happens when there is a flash drive plugged in. Maybe you could check in the bios that other boot options are disabled and no flash drives or usb mouse are plugged in. Only guessing here.

How old is your laptop. I have experience similar problems to RoMark with a flash disk, and external hard drives plugged into USB ports.

If this is the problem, I can only think that flashing the bios might help.

Also, if you have a live linux cd, you can check whether it isn't the CD itself that's causing the problem.

I think your other option can be to boot the installation over PXE, but only if your laptop supports that. Let me know if you need a guide for this.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I will try and disable as much as possible without rendering the machine cripple and let you know.

*blush*@ having to go and google PXE :D

in ur bios, disable AHCI. Will fix it, ur try googling ur laptop model+cant install windows xp.. should give u the exact steps
