The other thing, I was hasty and upset and then opened the casing and took the HDD out. A friend of mine tested it on a PC and says the PC just beeps and I also tested it on a Multimedia Player and it says "Device not Recognized" in Windows. I got the HDD backdoor, so thought Warranty not valid anyway so just opened it. Trying my luck here, but is there anyway possible that I can get swop my drive out.

We can easily replace your series for you. The last drive I lost had documents on it that had not been backed up for a year. Nobody else can replace that for me.

The actual drive in the case is still the origional or have you replaced it with another drive ?

Hi Gary,

As per request, please see pics of the casing. Have not damaged the casing. The S/N 2GE921P5. Really hope you can help. Do you perhaps have an email so that I can email the pics to you. Not too sure how to add pics here

And then to add to my misery, a colleague of mine knocked another TB that I was copying from and now that one is not working. Its the white Seagate Freeagent. The drive has slight beeping sound on it. I really hope that the drive has not gone, because it is another colleague of mines HDD.

If possible can you check that one for me also - SN 2GEVAVDX

If your hard drive suffered physical impact (a fall as you stated) then the damage is linked, ie. physical damage to the head stack and possibly the platters too.

Be careful, you need an accurate diagnosis before you try DIY repairs. Swapping out the PCB is going to do nothing as it's not PCB related, and will only complicate things further. Removing the TVS diodes on the PCB won't help unless the problem is caused by a surge or spike, as mentioned, and this is not the problem judging by what you mentioned.

Someone also mentioned a firmware fix. This is only for a VERY specific problem, not the problem you're experiencing. Doing this when it is not needed, or one mistype of a character and your drive is bricked.

You need a head swap most likely, definitely not a DIY job. Especially on high density multiple platter drives. The more you try and run the drive, the more you will damage it.

That was for a different poster with a different problem, not the OP.
 
Sure, I was just mentioning that the fix is only to be used on a particular model of drive with specific symptoms or else you kill the drive. I've heard of some people running that fix on any old Seagate drives and the end result isn't pretty.
 
sounds like you need to keep your external drives laying flat and not standing up.

I'd think it's always good to give people an idea of the implications that might occur. They might not know that an fullstop in the wrong place could lose them gigs of data.

But true...if someone doesn't read properly and goes on a cowboy DIY mission then maybe they deserve what they get.

I have to agree with that, it does not take much to knock one over. I like the ones with rubber feet that lie flat like the samsungs for example.

Touché. It's amusing when you hear someone say "...it wasn't working so I opened it up and..." :D Especially if it's a WD.

Indeed. I've been doing (limited) DR for quite a while - PCB repairs/replacements, HDA swaps, issues that don't need any specialised equipment so to speak. I've just recently forked out a huge amount of euros for proper DR equipment, so I'm equiped to tackle all areas of DR now. I see you're involved in DR as well, so you'll know what the equipment was that I got - and how much it cost :(
