HDTV Choice

sn3rd, Dolby:

Let's put our money where our mouths are.

I bet you both that HTC_guy will walk out of Game tonight favouring 42" Series 4 plasma over Series 5/EX400 LCD for TV/sport.

You both, or at least sn3rd, say that he will walk out favouring Series 5 LCD? Am I correct?

:D

Mmmm ... no. I think they agree with you ... at a R6K budget for SD sport, the bigger plasma will be the better choice.

Postman - did you not read what I saw a few pages?

Most will opt for the larger screen. It works like that with most things in life - quality vs quantity.

2 x Elac speakers for R25,000.00 - or 7 x Mission speakers with a sub?
Mazda MPS - or BMW 320i?
7.1 Sony amplifier - or 5.1 Yamaha amplifier?
24" Yangi screen - or 19" Samsung?

I'll go a step further and say he *loves* his plasma because - lets face it - he's just spent R6,000.00 on it.

I really could not care about technical specs comparison and your problems with it... All I care about is which is best for TV/sport because that is my purpose.

Plasma's are also great for console gaming.

Oh BTW I don't own a plasma. I'm looking to upgrade from a Samsung P2350G that I use for gaming and I've found that at the price/performance ratio, the Samsung 42" HD Plasmas provide the best bang for your buck.

Um.

It's generally accepted by everyone (barring Postman) that LCD is the clear winner in the gaming and PC area.

Can I get some clarification on this "720p/1080i Digital HD"

I know its not full HD coz thats 1080p (ie. blu-ray).

When I connect this sammy to my PC, I wanna be able to run a res of 1920 x 1080... Will this "1080i" be able to do this?

little confused on this one. I guess that is why I wanted to go with full HD in the first place, so my PC could connect using 1920 x 1080

thoughts?

Dolby perhaps, sn3rd no. Check back a page or two (I view 40 posts per page) and he said he'd take the Series 5 over the Series 4 plasma for TV/sport...

Still wondering (hoping :D) if he was joking or not.

So for TV/sport most will opt for plasma because of its size, and not because of its picture quality compared to similarly priced Series 5 LCD?

:D

Agreed. Better colours & blacks (plasma in general as a technology on the whole and better response times

I would imagine so. Not to mention the fact that it'll be better for TV and sport than any similarly priced LCD.

Nonsense. The only reason anyone would remotely accept that gaming is better on LCD is because of their misconceptions in applying old plasma tech downfalls (image burn in) to new plasmas, which do not suffer from burn-in problems when used correctly.

How anyone could think gaming is better on something that generally produces poorer colours, blacks and response time, is beyond me.

PC gaming yes. Console gaming otherwise.

Ok.

Then perhaps help me out.

Plasma is better value, more natural, better motion, better at games, better black level, better white level, more vivid and the best thing ever. They introduced these TVs and sold millions upon and mllions. Apart from being the best thing out there - they were extremly popular getting cheaper and better by the year.

A few years later they introduce this horrible technology. Despite the massive lead plasma had and the better technology, people swapped and started purchasing LCD. Thousands of people that initially bought plasma, swapped to LCD and were happy. LCD started eclipsing the better technology and one by one companies starting dropping the technology. So much so, that plasma may not be around in a few years.

How correct is this?

I know man succumbs to marketing - but do you really think that marketing can persuade us to drop the best technology for horrible?

I'm still trying to fathom myself :/

Burn in and image retention have never been misconceptions : they happened in 2004, 2008 and 2010. They're a fact unfortunatley.

By the way, when speaking of black levels - maybe should should put a disclaimer that excludes all the superior models so your argument has a bit more weight? :/

No, the cheaper plasmas are native 720p/1024x768 so you would not get Windows doing 1080p.

However, videos will look fantastic, as the plasmas downscale. Like I said, 1080p rips look out of this world.

honestly, mostly 720p series and some 1080p movies

I probably was just gonna load up a game or two to have a laugh and see what WoW/HoN looked like on such a big screen

other than than I'll be watching tennis from dstv with a normal SD decoder

Yes they have been. They were real problems in 2004 and ±2008 in that it was much easier to get burn-in. You obviously missed Wasp's/others' posts about gaming on plasma, watching postboxed movies for hours on end and not getting burn in.

I am talking to you, not the layman just entering the conversation (you seem to constantly be talking to the layman just entering the conversation to try and make me look dumb). You of all people know all too well what I mean when saying plasma has superior black levels - it's as a technology as a whole/in general.

Plasma all the way. Simple as that. :)

Remember, from viewing distance, the difference between FHD and HD isn't noticeable.

so when I connect this sammy to my PC its going to run at 1024 x 768

Will it then squash the 1920 x 1080 movie onto this tiny screen??

I'm sorry... 720p referes to a resolution of 1280x720...

A 1024x768 panel is NOT 720p.... It has to process the image to display it...
