Heat pump, Good Idea?

I think you're overcomplicating it. With our sun and with the price of panels, why not just go with direct PV heating with Geyserwise or similar?

It's less than R 20k in parts including the geyser, two panels and balance of system.

You get the dual element for AC input, temperature control and HA automation are ready to go.
 
I know you folks mean well but my original question has already been buried by advice I didn't really ask for.

I know other options exist, I never said I was purchasing this kit I just want to find out more.

I've already reached out to one company (chillnet.co.za) who seem to be legit and have this on their website but got a reply back saying they only do aircons, not heat pumps. This doesn't fill me with confidence.

He can save R20k and just be a bit less efficient with the panels and geyser he has already. He can always add another MPPT charger to the battery for extra panels on the other roof.

Maybe not that specific kit, but I am sure you can find reviews for other kits online that work with a similar principle with the tank. Then you can get an idea. Deye is a reputable brand, so I wouldn't worry about reliability.

Just note though, these kits run into the 30k to 40k region with install. I did enquire about one a while back (can't remember the name) and they told me it is 35k with install.

These guys. They had plenty of installs done on their social media. Don't know if it's with solar panels though (I don't know why you care about the solar panels when you can run this easily off an inverter with a 3rd of the draw of a normal element).

Yup, I know the cost - these Deye ones are however quite a bit cheaper than the Stiebel Eltron units I was looking at previously and those don't have great wifi/remote control capabilities. I emailed them (Stiebel Eltron) earlier the year asking about it and they said they had a new model coming in 2026 (maybe) but it would probably be even more expensive.

Deye has proved themselves in the market here which is why this specific kit caught my eye.

Remote monitoring and control, I wouldn't worry too much about. I have smart switches from Tuya that I use to control my geyser and kitchen (added it only if for any reason I need to run my geyser off the inverter). They do energy monitoring and all kinds of control you probably won't need to use.

Everything is done via the Tuya app. You just get an electrician to install whichever device from Tuya you want.

I have a smart switch already on the geyser circuit but what I want specifically is temperature monitoring and the ability to toggle things without having to turn the entire circuit off.

I currently have a Geyserwise system which has very good integration with my Home Assistant setup but I'm decommissioning the old evacuated tube system that came with the house as it's essentially useless when you have PV (not effective in winter and in summer I have plenty of excess PV). I want a heat pump system as it's just way more efficient and easier on the inverter and batteries.

@Lupus just installed a heat pump for his geyser for R19k.

Well not really? What details would you like? It depends on the size of your geyser, 150l can get away with a 3.6kw heatpump which will run at about 900w to heat the water. This goes for about 15k, I chose the 4.7kw super which tops out at 1.2kw but it heats water to the equivalent of a 5.4kw heat pump so it heats quicker.
For a 200l you would need a 5.4/4.7 super which is 16 to 19k. Installation ranges from 5k to 10k (depending on where, how and what is needed), ITS one runs off the Tuya smart life app, it has a timer to run and setup the temps it turns on and off at, so you can control it like that. To go from 20 degrees to 55 degrees took my system just under 2 hours. A 3.6kw would've taken closer to 3.

What's the noise level like with that ITS outdoor unit?

I've seen them also when browsing around but as it's not a brand I'm familiar with or have seen installed anywhere before I have just kind of ignored them.

Good to know it uses Tuya, at least I know it will work in Home Assistant then.
