HELP: Car Rolled with Handbrake Up

School fees indeed. However your car will not pass Dekra or similar if the handbrake takes more than 3 notches to brake the car.

I guess the Dekra thing won't carry any weight either.

Agh. It was a long shot anyway. Still need to get them to fix the handbrake.

I see there was a recall on all honda's made between 07 and 08 for handbrake failure. Bought mine in 09. So probably unrelated. But a quick google indicates i'm not the only one with the handbrake failing. I doubt I'm going to get any joy from Honda.

This has been a rough month. R6000 for the parts on the serivce. R4000 for tyres. And now this

Dude- just exactly what kind of service was that? I had my 2.2 Civic serviced 2 weeks ago, R3k8 parts and labour, all in (was the 120k km service so it was a big one- diesel filter and gearbox oil + coolant replacement on top of the usual). Which stealership was this?

Also, if they did work on the brakes/hand brake. I'd raise hell. Call head office, go to the press, hellopeter, whatever. Even if you don't get a cent back for the damages from them. I wouldn't just shut up.

Break pads disc lights. 90000. I asked a different dealer to check. Says he can adjust it but technically it's fine the way it is. So even though it was much looser, I'd get no joy from the dealer.

I'm just going to claim from insurance.

Yes I remember how a certain dealership tried to deny liability for one of their staff writing off an RS4 a few years ago.

That was in Noseweek... they had to pay up eventually after a moerse fight

on what kind of a slope? my handbrake works fine, I'm just curious how they define this.

I also leave my car in gear since the handbrake isn't great anyway and even after many services it's still bad

When going to work on a slight incline into the driveway I have to keep reving or it will roll even with the handbrake on so feel sorry for the OP

Forget it. If the handbrake still engages right at the top there's even less chance. They are going to say you didn't park properly. (handbrake not up and vehicle not in gear).

I'm not denying that. I'm just saying that’s the official parking procedure. If he desides to take on the dealership, they can't claim that the car wasn't in gear.

k53 is more guidelines than rules. Driving style wise that is. Like you can't get fined for not checking your blind spot before changing lanes, it's not a law, it's a guideline because it's 'best practice'. In the same manner parking with your car in neutral is not a law but may be a guideline required for taking the test.

Note I'm not saying that is true. I can't remember and don't have a copy of the book with me, I do remember that when you come to a stop that you put your car in neutral and pull the handbrake up. There's nothing stopping you putting the car into gear once the engine has been turned off. No part of the K53 covers this.

If you park in gear and your car is moved for whatever reason (car hits yours, bumps your car while parking, towing) it'll most likely cause damage to the gearbox.

Also a non-working hand-brake means a car isn't road worthy.

Real cars have working hand-brakes, this isn't the 1980s, just sayin.

I can't help but tentatively disagree. I'm not much in the mood for the maths, but my gut says an enthusiastic getaway will put much, much higher forces through the gearbox than what even dragging a stationary car would.

Yeah but the ratio is now reversed so it does actually make sense. We had a thread about this...someone got rear-ended while stationary at a robot & gearbox blew a week later or something like that.
