Greetings guys
I am currently on an OpenWeb 2Mbps Gold Uncapped account (not any of the promotion-type accounts, such as the Leon account). I have been fairly satisfied with the service given to me over the past few months, however recently its been going to cr*p. I acknowledge that I am a heavy downloader and I recently sent an email to OW stating this and also that if my usage is the cause of the unstable and poor connection, I will gladly reduce my usage.
Their consultant humbly stated that any shaping on my connection is based on their network usage and not mine and that shaping is a given part of the uncapped package. I said that I fully understand that shaping is normal, but that does not justify my dismal speeds of 20-40Kbps during the day (0Kbps on NNTP and P2P by the way, absolutely nothing). She replied very shortly and moved me to a new account, for which I was very grateful for.
The new account was good, but definitely not of a "Gold" standard, I was getting about 100-120Kbps during the day but speed drops were very frequent. Recently, I have been feeling the need to move to a newer ISP on a higher package.
I don't hold anything against OpenWeb as they have been very kind to me during my time with them and I did have good experiences during the first few months. I just wanted to make this clear so that nobody thinks that this is a "bashing" against OpenWeb, BECAUSE IT IS NOT; unfortunately I just feel that another ISP would be better for me.
I have definitely ruled out MWEB due to their recent dilemmas. I do not want to go back to WebAfrica, as I have had bad experiences with them, and they weren't too generous with the bandwidth for me. I'm on the fence with Telkom because some people say that they are stepping up to the game recently, but Afrihost is at the centre of my attention. They have some decent prices and many people say that their customer service is very impressive.
I do download quite a bit, but I do not download 24/7, and if I do have some weighty downloads, I schedule them during 7pm and 7am (as per OpenWeb's stated unshaped period). I also do a bit of online gaming (BF4, DOTA, Crysis, COD, etc) and I do quite a bit of streaming on YouTube and I plan to open up a Netflix account soon.
So far, I have been considering Afrihost's 10Mbps consumer uncapped bundle and the 4Mbps business uncapped account (both are R897pm inclusive of line rental). I know that one has a huge speed bonus over the other, but shaping would presumably be a heck of a lot better on the business package.
Any advice from you guys? And of course, any help is appreciated
