Update

At long last determined what is eating up data and bandwidth - window updates! Or to be more specific http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us (IP 207.46.221.218:80, 207.46.13.28:80 etc.).
The problem I STILL have is - this is happening even with the automatic updates switched completely off from control panel, firewall blocking any outside access without any exceptions!!!
Our IT deparment doesn't seem to know why or how fix it... Grrrrrr. Any ideas here??? Thanks again for all the help yesterday - put me right on track!

I suspect your firewall is allowing the connection as it's being initiated from your PC, i.e. from the inside.

Block the IP for both incoming and OUTGOING ports and you should be OK.

Or otherwise let the update complete. Maybe you didn't update in a while and it's trying to catch up.

I've given up and resigned to the fact the M$ controls my PC and not me.....so I just let the updates happen. Seems easier than to fight it....

Problem sorted!

Hi guys,

I believe my problem is solved! Apparently my laptop distinguished between a "user" and "administrator" of which i am both. The auto off settings i changed from control panel for auto udates only changed them for a user, but not computer. I had to go into contol panel-administration-services and switch off auto updates and background intelligence transfer service from there. All seems fine so far. Thanks you for all your help!

I have had no end of problems using the 3G Router

The Nozomi drivers are buggy, and I have to unplug and replug the power to the router at least 5 times a day.

I have noticed that after the router hangs the lights flash constantly on the 3G card, I believe that I am being billed for whatever the problem is with the 3G card. constant disconnects/reconnects ????

The amounts of data I am being billed for, do not reflect the actual usage I'm using.

Instead of a R1000 bill per month, I'm getting R7000.

I plan to ditch the 3G router, and install the 3G card in a Linux box, so that I can see what the hell is going on.

I have for 4 months being trying to resolve the probems with Vodacom, but they still haven't even managed to update my account, so that I am on the 2G bundle.

I am still listed on the 500M option, and I have to fight EVERY GODDAMN MONTH to sort it out.

IT IS STILL SET TO THE 500M OPTION. Despite numerous phone calls from just about every member of staff at Vodacom !

THE 3G ROUTER IS SO BAD, THAT I PLAN TO INSTALL SEPERATE 3G CARDS IN EACH MACHINE, IT WILL BE CHEAPER !

Monitor Bandwidth

This is problably not the correct forum but here goes.

something is chowing up my 3G bandwidth, does anybody know of a nice (preferrably freeware) app that can tell me what process / app is using how much bandwidth?

Thanks

Veroland, I have installed Netmeter last week - info from MTN Folder. Small, non intrusive(options) and it is freeware.

I'm having a siimlar problem. losing a lot of data

With my firewall (bitDefender) I detected that svchost.exe was the culprit.
when i block it my browser (firefox) doesnt work.

when i block one or 2 listings of svchost (there are 3 listings for it in the firewall program) the browser works - but i dont know if the other listings may be needed for something else like ftp.

how would i do an nslookup or how do i know whether i can block or should allow it to connect?

my windows automatic updates are turned off.

Usage Stats

I understand that usage in the dash is not a good indicator of how much of my data i have used.....but the gap between the dash and vodacom4me is way to large for me to be comforatble with it.

Dash = 735
VCME = 950

Does anyone have a suggestion or an app i could use to track my usage ?

Or DUMeter, I use both on my own system.

I use Netlimiter if I want to throttle apps, and DUMeter to log and graph usage and set alerts.

This is probably in the event of a single connection but what must one do if you are using a wireless router with several people connecting through it?
A usage app on each computer (not a feasible solution) or how is one to gauge the usage, in light of having to be accountable for your own usage and not being able to seemingly rely on the usage stats from V4Me.

Usage is already such a contested debate ... Can you imagine the mayhem this will cause when the unrestricted apn become available.

AFAIK it depends on your Service Provider. I'm with VSP and they invoice on the 3rd of every month... if that helps

Apologies. Let me rephrase. When do I start using my 1GB for the month?

I understood the 1st of the month.

I need to check on how to get logged stats from the router.

Yes. The new bundle starts from midnight on the first day of the month. i.e. at midnight on the 30th of Sept your new bundle starts. I've watched it happen in v4me.
